Find Ancestors

Hi Heather,
I searched throught GenesReunited but couldn't find and tree with Peter Fenton, so I went to Ancestory.com and found 2 trees that look like they could be the same family as mine. I will contact them and find out. If they are the same family I will post a result on this board.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. We had been coming to a dead end for years so I decided to try this board. You have all been a great help.

Hi Heather, I've ruled out the Chester le Street Robert Fenton. I would be the one born in Boldon, Durham, England.

I will have to look for the other Fenton Tree. I assume it is in GenesReunited. I also have one listed as 'Fenton Family Tree' in GenesReunited and one on Ancestory.com

The names on transcriptions are as good as the transcriber can read them - you need to look at the images yourself really. It may be worth you taking an ancestry sub for future research.

Did you see the info re the ancestry trees with him?

That is interesting to know. We got Mariner as the occupation for Peter from Robert's Death certificate. I'm not too sure about this last one you sent though. The spelling of the surname is incorrect, but the names and ages are right. Some of the information is different though to the reply from Sue C above. I supose it depends who transcribes the original records.

Brilliant - I wanted to see the image for their ages when I saw your submission and I thought I must be going senile when it didnt come up under fenton. It was only when Jim said it was a mistrans that I realised Im not totally senile yet - LOL.

Its amazing how you can get some better results from the different banks of info. I havent bought credits on there for ages but recently they mail shot me and I had a look at the new London burials on there and wow, my GGFx4 shot up buried at a non comformist chapel in 1813 Southwark. I then found his wife and one daughter buried same place 1825. I was well pleased.

Heather, yes. Every now and then it is easier to get results on Findmypast than on Ancestry......not always mind you!

Sue, out of interest, where did you get your result - is that find my past? I note on the 1851 mum is shown as a widow and an ag lab.

Right, well, IF it exists, you can look on freebmd website for the reference, once you have that you can buy it from GRO online for £7.

If Peter is listed in 1841 he will appear on the census under his name just as if he were at home. Unfortunately mariners at sea do not usually appear unless they are in port or they have a particularly diligent captain.

Im not sure why you are concerned about them shortening the name - its fine - you are fortunate to get a name that is recognisable at all!

Yes I was wondering if Peter was listed on the 1841 census. On the 1841 Robert was listed as ROBT.
I wanted to know how to get information on the registration of the birth of Robert Fenton, abt 1840.

Added to last message. In the 1841 he was listed as ROBT not Robert

Do you mean Peter, the dad? Well his birth would be before registration which started in 1837 and wasnt compulsory til 1875 so its a matter of checking parish records.

Hi Jim,

After years of searching I think you have found the right one for us. My Gran and Dad alway said he was born Sth Shileds, Sunderland. Boldon is in the middle between them. His death registration in Australia states that his mother was Frances (one above is spelt Francis). His father was listed as Peter, Mariner. Being a mariner could explain the fathers absence from the census.

Does anyone know if he is listed on the 1841 Census. Also how I can get information of his birth registration?

We had almost ruled that one out, and now you have sent the full entry we are 99% sure it is not the correct one. There is a listing for a Robt Fenton, age 1, registration district Shields, South. We think this might be the correct one. If anyone has access to that record it would be great.
