you can order the certificate from the GRO via the site
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

make sure you tick the box which asks if you knowthe registration details

use the deatils from the info I gave you (if you want to check it is on the free site freebmd.org.uk)

If it says the cost is more than £7 check what you have input. At the moment it is taking about 6 days for the cert to reach you.

you have to buy the certificate (from the GRO cost £7) using the reference. The cert will give you his father's full name and occupation and his mothers full maiden name. It will not give either of their ages.
You need to trace backwards after that so that you make sure you are following the right line.
When you know the parents names you can look for the marriage ref to get that cert etc......

the free site freebmd.org.uk is very useful for finding registration references.
