You know his parents' names? In 1881, there is this one born in Mile End with the wrong birthdate, and there are two with the right birthdate in different parts of London.
Name: William Adlington Age: 4 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877 Relation: Son Father's Name: Thomas Mother's Name: Anne Gender: Male Where born: Mile End, Middlesex, England Civil Parish: Limehouse County/Island: London Country: England Street address: 4 Farrants Terr Occupation: Scholar Registration district: Stepney Sub-registration district: Limehouse ED, institution, or vessel: 25
Anne Adlington 32 Edgar Adlington 3 George Adlington Sarah Adlington 63 Thomas Adlington 32 Thomas G. Adlington 8 William Adlington 4
Just wanting to know how he tends to look in censuses.

Hi Gerald,
I think the process would have been as follows: enumerator leaves a census return with the householder. Householder completes the schedules. Enumerator returns to check it over, or fill it out if the householder is illiterate, and then transcribes the collected returns onto the sheets that were stored centrally and then microfilmed.
Sometimes the error is the enumerator unable to read the householder's writing (although he ought to have asked when reviewing the return) or there may be a transcription error when compiling the computer index (FindMyPast/Ancestry etc). Looking at the image here it is difficult to guess what might have happened if this is the person you are looking for. It is usual for the enumerator to list the head of the household, then the wife and the childre in age order. On the image, therefore, it states the parents, then Thomas, William, Edgar, George as ages 8,4,3, 9mo. It is clearly a 4 written for William's age (the year of birth is not stated on the returns). Perhaps the enumerator misread the 7 as a 4?
If he is not there in 1901, might he be in the Boer War? If so, he might have been called up again for WW1 service and have a pensioner record on Ancestry - or might you find him on passenger lists if in common with others at this time he may be exploring emigration?
All the best

Uh oh -- that record in the IGI is one of those "submitted" ones -- no documentation, and not to be relied on without some substantiation.
But Gerald -- if you had info suggesting he died in Canada, why not say so to start with?? I'm in Canada and have access to Cdn records at Ancestry. I would have checked immediately.
Has someone muddled the two Benjamins?
Because here's who we have in the 1911 Canadian census:
Name: William B Adlington Gender: Male Marital Status: Single Age: 9 Birth Date: Sep 1901 Birthplace: England Family Number: 127 Relation to Head of House: Nephew Immigration Year: 1910 Tribal: English Province: Ontario District: Elgin East District Number: 65 Sub-District: Bayham Sub-District Number: 6 Place of Habitation: Bayham Census Year: 1911 Page: 11 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Percy Adlington 28 Alice A Adlington 29 Ella M Adlington 1 William B Adlington 9 Mary J Adlington 8 Frank L Edgerton 19
Percy born in England -- but no immigration year; Alice born in Ontario.
That's the William Benjamin born in 1901. Is that who the death record refers to?

The >> is WBA Jr. One of the others with unstated age could be WBA Sr.

In 1911:

His does say "W" and hers says "M" -- no indication that she is his wife on the original page.
Name: Mary J Adlington Gender: Female Marital Status: Single Age: 8 Birth Date: Dec 1902 Birthplace: England Family Number: 127 Relation to Head of House: Niece Immigration Year: 1910
It looks like Percy is William Sr.'s brother and Alice and her two children are living with him.

Percy and George came to Canada as Home Children.
WBA's children WBA JR. and Mary ended up in Canada with Percy, who seems to be WBA Sr.'s brother.
The Alice in the 1911 census, it seems:
Name: Alice Maud Adlington [Alice Maud Marshall] - name added by Ancestry based on father's name Death Date: 24 Dec 1933 Death Location: Elgin Gender: Female Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882 Birth Location: Ont Father: William Marshall Mother: Rebecca Dickie
Name: Adlington Death Date: 1 Mar 1931 Death Location: Elgin Gender: Male Estimated Birth Year: abt 1873 Birth Location: England
I checked the image -- it's:
Thomas George Adlington length of residence in province: 25 years father: Thomas Adlington mother: Mary Adlington informant: Stanley Adlington, son
Ella in 1911; niece? Hmm.
Name: Ella May Adlington Date of Birth: 6 Dec 1909 Gender: Female Birth County: Elgin Father's Name: Percival Adlington Mother's Name: Alice Marshall Roll Number: VRBCAN1908_102543
Name: Percival Stanley Adlington Date of Birth: 3 May 1903 Gender: Male Birth County: Elgin Father's Name: Thomas George Adlington Mother's Name: Rosa Ann Moule Roll Number: MS930_38
Name: Lena Addlington Date of Birth: 11 Mar 1907 Gender: Female Birth County: Elgin Father's Name: Geo R Addlington Mother's Name: Jennie Dennis Roll Number: MS929_185
Name: William Earl Addlington Date of Birth: 24 May 1904 Gender: Male Birth County: Elgin Father's Name: George R Addlington Mother's Name: Jennie Dennis Roll Number: MS929_167
This "Alice" name seems to be coincidence, since she is Alice Marshall and WBA Sr's wife was Alice Holley.
Who did WBA marry in 1910?
Sims. Adlington births 1901 and after:
David L Adlington 1919 Oct-Nov-Dec Sims Newport M Frederick V Adlington 1918 Apr-May-Jun Sims Newport M Norman G Adlington 1912 Oct-Nov-Dec Sims Newport M Percival L Adlington 1911 Apr-May-Jun Newport M Mary Jane Adlington 1903 Jan-Feb-Mar Newport M William Benjamin Adlington 1901 Oct-Nov-Dec Newport M
So WBA Sr. was in England up to 1918 at least.
I'm going to leave you with all this raw data for the moment and let you do some sorting, and then you can tell me what else you might like checked!

Re emigration in the 30s -- unfortunately, the FindMyPast records only go to 1930!
I should have mentioned the limitations of Cdn records, if you're not familiar.
Census -- to 1911.
Ontario: births - to 1909 marriages - to 1924 deaths - to 1934
Very stringent privacy law.
There's only one marriage:
Name: Peter Adlington Spouse Name: Jane Myers Marriage Date: 15 Mar 1893 Marriage Place: Hamilton Marriage County: Hamilton Registration Number: 44660 Archives of Ontario Microfilm: 80 Source: Indexed by: Genealogical Research Library
but -- the originals, the scans and the transcriptions are all so horrific that one can never be sure there isn't something else.
I missed this death, though:
Name: Mary Jane Adlington Death Date: 18 May 1915 Death Location: Elgin Gender: Female Estimated Birth Year: abt 1903 Birth Location: Newport Mon <<
Aha! The original record says:
Father: William B Adlington Mother: Alice Holly
Good heavens -- cause of death: accidental shooting.
And, from the original image, the informant for this death:
Name: Alice Maud Adlington [Alice Maud Marshall]
was Percy S. Adlington, husband.
Name: Mary Irene Adlington Death Date: 12 May 1928 Death Location: Elgin Gender: Female Estimated Birth Year: abt 1928 Birth Location: Bayham -- father George Adlington, born England
These people are unquestionably all related. I grew up in Middlesex County, which adjoins Elgin County, and Bayham is so tiny I've never heard of it. Spent many a summer day at Port Stanley, 20 miles away -- I see now on Google maps. Take a look: Bayham is a point on a secondary highway; not even a crossroads. Can't get too close in on satellite view, but it's obviously farming country. Right near Tilsonburg -- immortalized in Stompin' Tom Connors' famous farmworker lyrics, "Tilsonburg, Tilsonburg, my back still hurts when I hear that word."
That was a dump of data alright, so let me know when you've mulled!

Hi Gerald and Kathryn,
I had understood that emigration was a one-way ticket away from the UK, but my mother-in-law recently told me that her family had travelled over to Canada and then again to the US before deciding that they would stay in the UK after all. They were not a wealthy family, but he had a reasonable job as a looms overseer.
It seems that Mary Jane and William Jr went over together with a spinster aunt (J Adlington age 54) on the April 1910 sailing, about the time that William snr was remarrying in Newport. Was this because Percy invited them over?
All the best
[ed: Kathryn, just seen your comment - it all fits well!]
