hello, i have been trying for a long while to find a record of a george thrower's death. he was born norwich 1850 and married maria pratt 1878. on the 1891 census maria was shown as a widow. i know that he had a child in 1887/88. so that means he would have died some time between 1887/88 and 1891. i have checked death records and cannot find him. i have also been told that he left the house some time 1887/88. due to family troubles, so did maria just say she was a widow, and what happened to george. any help would be much appreciated. valerie

That was the only reasonable one that I found, Michael.

But I can't find him on later censuses.

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 00:39

thanks for getting back to me, i didn't think it could be the blything one as it is not in norfolk. i have also checked the 1901 census and found a george thrower, blything with another family (unless he had another family). valerie

Do not forget that the death is where he was when he died, He mat have travelled,

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jul 2010 00:44

This would be the George who died in 1915, in the 1901 census:

Name: George Thrower
Age: 52
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Matilda
Where born: Hulver, Suffolk, England

Civil parish: Henstead
Town: Hulver Street
County/Island: Suffolk
Registration district: Blything

George Thrower 52
Matilda Thrower 50
Walter G Thrower 22
Annie E Thrower 11

and they're all there in 1881 in the same place

George Thrower 32 - gamekeeper
Matilda Thrower 30
Frederic Thrower 7
Herbert Thrower 5
Walter Thrower 2

so it looks like that death isn't him.

Oops, didn't notice Graham's narrative version of the same thing above.

I wouldn't confine searches to Norfolk. Someone deserting a family, as he may have done, might have travelled some distance. And changed his name ... remarried ...

Graham

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 00:53

yes i agree. i did think that maybe he went abroad as i couldn't find him, but i have not got a clue how to find him there. valerie.

I was just about to check at FMP. ;)

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action?

About the only findable possibility:

THROWER 1852 M 1892 London Australia Launceston

Launceston is in Tasmania.

There is a more vague and less likely (I'd think) one:

THROWER Unknown M 1917 London Gibraltar Gibraltar

Anyone with FMP access want to check details?

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 01:28

thanks for all your help so far, i will check in the morning to see if you have had any further luck with finding him. valerie.

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 10:23

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jul 2010 10:44

Aha. If *we* had known that, our collective brains might have come up with it. It's certainly something many of us have encountered before. I did say:

Someone deserting a family, as he may have done, might have travelled some distance. And *changed* his name ... remarried ...

For info:

Deaths Sep 1887
Knapp George Thrower 36 Forehoe 4b 117

If he did leave the family, he didn't survive long.

This is the 1891 household:

Maria Thrower 38
Mildred Martha Thrower 19
Rosa Thrower 11
Georgana Thrower 9
Horace George Thrower 4
Martha Thrower 3

so Martha is the youngest child you referred to. Have you found a record of her birth? I don't see one for her or Horace ... Just wondering whether the younger children might not be George's - ?

No, here's Horace:

Name: George Horace Thrower
Year of Registration: 1886
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: St Faiths
County: Norfolk
Volume: 4b
Page: 104

... but no Martha.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jul 2010 10:51

And here's why:

Name: Mildred Martha Pratt
Year of Registration: 1887
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: St Faiths
County: Norfolk
Volume: 4b
Page: 93

That's what I was suspecting.

She was Matilda Martha's daughter, not George and Maria's.

(It is possible that Maria might have had a child with another man before George's death and registered her under Maria's birth surname -- but not that she would have given her the same name as her eldest daughter, I think. ;) )

Graham

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 12:08

it is complicated, i believe mildred martha pratt might be the daughter of mildred martha pratt and the george thrower. i am now going to apply for his death cert. thanks for all this information. regards valerie

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 29 Jul 2010 12:12

That was exactly what I was wondering, and I had wanted to mention how not unheard of that sort of thing was, but hadn't wanted to say out loud. (And still is today, unfortunately, particularly for stepdaughters as in this case.) It would certainly be one explanation for his leaving home, or being put out, right at that time.

Graham

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 12:24

thanks janeycanuck, as you stated it is not a thing to say out loud, that is why i am trying to find georges death certificate. you are so good at this and so quick at getting back to me. thanks again. regards valerie. (ps. i am very slow, even typing a message back) (pps. another question, perhaps you can tell me the cheapest place to order certificates from)

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 29 Jul 2010 16:13

Most of us order certs from the General Register Office (GRO):

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

You can do it online. Make sure you enter the details carefully on the screens that will come up - Pick Death Cert from the list (don't give his age), then enter the details exactly as given on this thread, Surname, Forenames, say Yes you have got the GRO reference, Year of death, District (Farehoe), Quarter, Volume and Page. Cost £9.25.

You can also order from the local register office, cost should be around £9 plus postage, but check as some are more. The GRO is currently taking about 4 days to send, which is pretty good.

Graham

Graham Report 29 Jul 2010 16:52

thanks for the message about cost of certificates, thankyou all once again for all your help. regards valerie.
