I have the marriage cert of my gr grandparents, George Welland and Margaret Monaghan, married Dec 24 1876, both aged 20, married St James Westminster. George was born 1856 in Plymouth. On the marriage certificate his father is also George Welland proffession Sailor. Can anyone help me with information on George Welland (father) that is all the information I have on him. I do not know his birth or wifes name,

It might be easier to start by finding George's birth/baptism in 1856, which would name both parents, and cross-check with the 1861 census.

Ivy, how do I do that,

The only birth I can find for a Welland in Plymouth 1855-1856 is for an Andrew.

No George Welland b 1855/6 Devon on the 1861 census

Hi Maria,

Have a look on Free BMD for the birth registration, and on the IGI (put familysearch into Google, the IGI is an American free site) for a baptism.

If you have either Ancestry or FindMy Past, you can search the 1861 census.

(Just going out, will check back)

Who were the witnesses when he married?

Was his father by chance 'deceased'?

Hi Maria,

I'm sorry there is no birth registration or baptism to be found on those sites. However, the others look to have found you the mother, Elizabeth Welland, so you could track her family forwards and see whether any other clues are available (for instance in baptism registers not yet on the IGI?)

All the best

Hi Brian

Have you searched the Genes Site for people researching WELLAND?
I think that you will be able to find at least one member researching Devon WELLAND's.
My own search has found several fellow members with surname interests in common with mine and we have been able to pool our information to mutual benefit.

Regards

Roger
