How do you know the maiden name of his wife without knowing when the marriage took place?

Maybe the census info is a different family?????
WILLIAM RAGG
Spouse: ELIZABETH ASHTON Marriage: 21 APR 1823 Bradfield, Yorkshire, England Batch No.: M007122
Suggest, Brian, that you find out the source of your info , as you are asking other people to put themselves out for you

Hi Flick All and any help is greatly appreciated. I was not intending to be "smart" only "lighthearted". I did not keep proper records when I first started this tree and I really do not know how I came by the wifes name. It is in my tree so I must have got it from somewhere or someone and I can not for the life of me remember where or when. No offence was intended by my flippant remark and I apologise if it was a cause for any upset. Brian

Brian I think I have found him on the 1851 census with his place of birth Bradfield. I have loads of Wraggs from there but I haven't time to follow it through at the moment as I have to go to the dentist.....JLe

Hi Janet All the info that FLICK came up with are my tree names except the 10.43 entry, they are not mine. Ann of GGables info is not relevant to me at all. I have the 1841, 1851 1nd1861 census's for William 1801. KATIE came up with a name of Septamus married to an Elizabeth. If you can confirm that Septimus 1780c is the father of William 1801 then I can start searching further back from there. When I read the word 'dentist' my blood ran cold at the thought of it. Hope it didn't hurt to much Good hunting brian

Hi Brian- Your blood ran cold at the mention of 'dentist', what about mine? Toothache and I have to wait a fortnight for the treatment......
My thoughts on the information given. William and Elizabeth have these children bapised at Bradfield John 1823 Elizabeth 1825 Henry 1827 Morgan 1830 Malin 1832 Margaret 1834 Adelaide 14 May 1838 in Hope Derbyshire- Parents William and Betty* I think Alfred may have been christened in Ecclesall Bierlow.
I think Flick's information on the marriage of William Wragg to Elizabeth Ashton is correct, it sounds good datewise and location,(although I thought the marriage might have been in Hope Derbyshire as that is the place of birth of Elizabeth on the 1851 census). If Elizabeth Ashton is the daughter of Isaac Ashton and Ann Gillot there is a christening in Hope of a *Betty Ashton within the correct time frame- 7 July 1799 . Now this is my lateral thought to connect this couple. There are lots of Gillots/Wraggs/Ashtons at Bradfield so I tried to find another 'Malin' as I thought it an unusual name . There are lots of Malin Gillots but only in the Sheffield area, there are no Malin Ashtons and just this one Malin Wragg. Its a tenuous link but worth a thought. I am unable to connect your family to mine. I have a William Wragg but mine is 1718 Bradfield. Probably part of the same family but eighty years too soon.- JLe

Hi Flick and Janet I don't want to be wasting your time by labouring a subject and monopolising you both but the issues that you have raised have now confused me, Morgan Wragg (son of William who was a cutler) married an Ann Bently on the 13 Apr 1852. Ann's father was Thomas Bently a scale cutter. This marriage took place in Rotherham Yorks source of info wedding lines from Morgan and Ann. The names that Janet mentions at 22.42 John is 1 year earlier than my John, Henry 1 year early, Margaret 1 year early, I do not have an Elizabeth 1825 and I do not have a Malin 1832. Could it be that I am following the wrong William of 1801 and is Elizabeth Harris 1801 erroneous as well. If this is taking up to much of your time and causing you to many problems to sort please say so Good hunting Brian

No problem for me.......I find the info, and post it for you to evaluate.
1861
Name: Morgan Wragg Age: 30 Estimated birth year: abt 1831 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Ann Wragg Gender: Male Where born: Bradford, Yorkshire, England Civil parish: Bishopwearmouth Ecclesiastical parish: Bishopwearmouth County/Island: Durham Country: England
Registration district: Sunderland Sub-registration district: South Bishop Wearmouth ED, institution, or vessel: 2 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 316 Household Members: Name Age Morgan Wragg 30 Ann Wragg 26 Charles Wragg 8 Ann E Wragg 4 Ellen Wragg 3 MO Mary Forcon 17 Referring back to the 1851 census which I posted, the father's occupation was Spring Knife Cutler. Morgan's occ was Edge Tool Cutter/Cutler - EXACTLY are per 1861
If you worry about a year's difference in ages in the mid 19th century, you're likely to cause yourself untold problems................a difference of 10 years is not unheard-of. So be flexible...........
The 1841 census rounded-down ages of over-15's to the nearest '5'
Also, the fact that you have not yet traced certain individuals does not preclude them from being part of the family. Elizabeth born c1825 would probably have left home before 1841........or she could have died. Equally, Malin could have died before the GRO came into being
Don't forget to allow for mistranscriptions of ANY records................

I don't think you are following the 'wrong' William.........I do feel, however, that you may need to re-think your ideas about his wife's maiden name.

Hi Brian Sorry I was missing yesterday but I am agreeing with Flick on this issue. If you are taking the ages from the census which are normally taken in March three quarters of the population won't have had their birthdays so they will appear one year younger. The information which Flick has provided is from the same source probably, which is familysearch and it has brought up the children of William Wragg and Elizabeth. I agree that there will have to be a rethink on Elizabeth's surname , something which doesn't always come easily in this game of family history.....we've all had to do it. I had a relative from Sheffied who wrote that my gt grandmothers surname was Brailsford, it took me years to find out it was Nixon, and her mother was from the Wragg family .....so giving wrong information might be a family trait!.....Happy searching - JLe
