The Lambeth birth for Laurence with mother's maiden name Murrell is the one I thought most likely as on the Surrey Recruitment Registers I posted he gives his birth place as Brixton which comes under the Lambeth Registration District.

Yes, I had discounted those births, as I was going by his age of 41 as given in the 1944 Chelmsford Chronicle report.

But maybe he lied to the reporter, or maybe the newspaper got it wrong.

Can't see a birth to match the details in that Attestation record posted by Kath.

If his name was actually Lawrence Henry, then the birth registered in 1902 in Worcester is the only one.

But who knows? He was clearly a good liar from quite an early age!

The article from the Essex Newsman 11th Jan. 1944:-

HAD THREE "WIVES"

Double Bigamy Charge

Frederick Henry Brown, 41, a soldier, was charged at Grays on Friday with bigamously marrying Maude Rose Annie Ayling on April 25, 1936 at Lewisham and Florence Mabel Woodcock at Stanford-le-Hope on Aug 10th 1940.

He was committed to the Essex Assize, and bail was allowed.

Mr. Tinsley, prosecuting, said the accused went through a form of marriage on Sept. 20th 1931 with his wife at Streatham. In 1936 he married Miss Ayling at Lewisham and in 1940 at Stanford-le-Hope he went through a form of marriage with Miss Woodcock.

"What it really boils down to is that the prisoner has committed bigamy twice" added Mr. Tinsley. "I suppose one calls him a trigamist and not a bigamist" (laughter).

Miss Ayling said she was working at Southend in 1935 when she met the accused, who was employed at the Kursaal. There were three children of the "marriage", one of whom had died.

Choccy Report 22 Jul 2017 07:42

Chelmsford Chronicle 11th February 1944

Pleading guilty to a double bigamy charge, Frederick Henry Brown, 41, a soldier, was stated to have pointed out his lawful wife to one of his bigamous wives as they were walking in Southend. The second bigamous wife was a widow to whom Brown described himself as a bachelor.
DC Bond told the Court that the prisoner's correct name was LAURENCE HENRY BROWN and there were 4 previous convictions against him.
He served with the 8th Army and was at El Alamein.
Mr J C Llewellyn said the 2nd bigamous wife was happy with Brown and had forgiven him. Sentence was 12 months imprisonment.
