You beat me to it AG!

The UK and Ireland Nursing Registers 1898 - 1968 on Ancestry have a Sarah Meadly
living at 7 Old Avenue Auchinleck in 1943 (though image says 1949-50 supplement), at Oakhill Nursing Association, Oakhill Park, Liverpool in 1948, and as Sarah McCrone nee Meadly back at 7 Old Avenue. Auchinleck in 1965.

So it looks probable she was the Sarah living at 24 Dovercliffe Rd in 1939.

It's good to know that she made a successful life for herself after an unpromising start.

There were three McCrone births in Auchinleck in the 1950s - but I'm pretty sure they're the children of a different couple (bride's mn Nimmo) who married in Auchinleck in 1952.

One of the children, James, was definitely their child, per his death.

I suspect Robert and Sarah didn't have children.

7 Old Avenue and neighbouring houses were council-owned - and seem to be so still, as none in that row have been sold, per Zoopla and other sites.

Sorn Road crosses Old Avenue at right angles, and "Glenafton" still has the name above the door. (per Streetview)
Mauchline Road meets the end of Sorn Road at right angles.

Had to go offline after my last post yesterday and only just managed to get back on. You two are geniuses. It just shows what you can find when you really know what you are doing. I am really grateful to you as I have been trying to find this information for about 10 years now. Sarah was my partners mothers sister. We didnt even know of her existence until I started the family tree as her mother had never mentioned having a sister. They both had a bad start in life being put in different childrens homes in Liverpool. Their mother died in 1911 and their father went into the workhouse where he was for years in and out and eventually died there. So pleased as you say that she made something of her life as did my partners mother who went into service and eventually made quite a good marriage and lived til she was 88 ending her life with us.
