Can anyone tell me what a 'tindal' is? Have a rellie whose occupation was tindal on the 1881 census. He was on a boat. Have googled it and nothing much there. The others on the census form were able seaman, ord seaman, etc.

Elizabeth from google there are lists of jobs and Tindal comes under jobs in Ports & Docks but it dosen't tell you what the job entailed. Update..... Tindal Handles machinery in the workshop and helps its erection and dismantling. Georgina.
