is there a site to check prison records from20th C

i am at present trying to find out what happened to my grandfather. i was told he was imprisoned at durham prison but not sure of date is there any where i can find out this info. thanks linda

There won't be anything online for something so recent. You would need to check the prison register which would be in the county records office. If its not there, I think you need to contact the Home Office as the records are probably protected for a certain length of time. If you can find out when/where he committed his crime, you could get a report from the local newspaper archive about it. This should also be in the county record office - but be warned, it might be unpleasant reading, depending on what he did. nell
