Its also as well to read up on the internet too, there are certain foods that can inhibit the thyroid drugs, most of the brassica [ cabbage, brocolli etc ]
can slow you down.

Sorry Lizz.... I didn't realise you had already been diagnosed... I thought you were wondering if you had a problem.

Good luck.... and it looks like you need to see your GP and get your dosage sorted out if you are feeling so poorly.

(((((hugs)))))

I really don't wish to scare you, but please go and get your bloods checked as soon as possible.

I was convinced I had an underactive thyroid, all my symptoms matched. .... I wasn't believed and was fobbed off, even told there was nothing serious as I was overweight, and a diet would sort me out. In the end, I saw a different doctor and begged him to take a blood test, as I felt as though I was dying.

I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. I really was dying... my bone marrow was 56% cancer. Another couple of weeks, and I would have missed Christmas 2008. Thankfully I am still here to tell my tale... and doing well. And enjoying every moment.

So although I am not saying that you have or even might have Leukaemia as well, there are a lot of things that appear to have similar symptoms to thyroid problems, some more serious than others.

So get that blood test done as soon as possible!

Love and ((((hugs)))))

If the book I have mentioned is correct ( best to consult your own GP) it says that sometimes those who are having a problem conceiving, once their thyroid is sorted ( if they have the problem that is) they are able to conceive.

Also not wise to drive while Hypothyroid

Best to look for updated info if looking on the web as there are many outdated theories.

to continue the list

Numbness and tingling in hands/fingers
Poor concentration ( a spacey feeling)
voice changes ( deepens)
Muscle aches and cramps
cracked skin ( dry)
clumsiness
brittle finger nails
constipation which leads to bloating

apparently many cases of depression are masked or misdiagnosed.

The book is great

For me it’s when my hair starts to fall out in handfuls
Each time it happens I have a blood test and the doc generally (last 3 times) says reduce the medication. Was on 400 now take 200, losing 4½ stone has helped!

Very dangerous if left untreated - go and see your doctor

I had mine removed nine years ago. My symptoms were weight gain and tiredness (tiredness is caused by carrying the extra weight), also because the thyroid supplies you with your energy and if it isn't working properly, you will tire.

Don't guess. Have it checked out and if you need to have all or part of it removed, you will need to be strict with your diet (more protein, less carbs, etc) in other words - a diet which is tailored to suit your condition - and regular annual or bi-annual checks to see if the dosage of your medication is still applicable.

Hi Joan

I am glad you added. Although it is unusual for men to have the complaint your post is proof that they do.

One good book.... The Thyroid source book ( 5th edition) by M Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D.

It can be purchased from Amazon.co.uk ( com) but most of it can be read on Amazon too.

It is apparently hereditary.

It is said that some people who have other diseases have in fact Hypo/perthyroidism. One is Fibromyalgia...so a blood test is a must.

I was told that about the coma too Joan. The tiredness gives way to sleep 24 hours a day with only a short time awake. Way off the scale was putting it mildly.

Susan10146857 Report 14 Jul 2010 23:42

where shall I start

Weight gain

memory problems

fatigue to the point of not being able to do anything whatsoever

dry skin

pain when swallowing

Depression

The only way to really know if the above are signs of Hypothyroidism is to ask your doctor for a blood test. If you have he will start you on a course of levothyroxine.

Hyperthyroidism is the opposite, loss of weight and no matter what is eaten ther will be no weight gain...

A right pain in the neck if left untreated
