I know this so is not me and this is a really daft question

When cooking Jam tarts do you need to blind bake the pastry 1st ?

Uzzi
Not a silly question at all and the answer is NO you do not cook the pastry first

I would recommend that you keep your eyes wide open whenever you are doing any sort of cooking ................ whether it be baking jam tarts or deep-frying mars bars.

Kitchens are dangerous places !

Hi Uzzi,

If its little jam tarts, my Mum used to make the pastry and add the jam before cooking.
I havnt had a jam tart for years, I used to love them.

We never do for small tarts, they are not in the oven long enough. Blind baking a pie crust is usually necessary only when it will be filled with an unbaked filling such as with pudding or cream pies or when the filling has a much shorter bake time than the crust and might be ruined if baked as long as it takes for the pastry to cook.

just aswell I asked ....thankyou Bridget and Teresa ..it is the little ones I am thinking about , for some reason I thought you had to blind bake.

Robin lol what can I say I have started cooking again ....and yes I know it's best not to be blind but the last time I tried to deep fry a mars bar well......................we won't go into that !
Mind mars bar flavoured vodka is something else

chop said mars bar up and place in said bottle of vodka (after drinking enough to fit said mars bar in) place in glass wash machine for a cycle or three and drink ....very yucky only do when
a) the owner of a pub and access to glass wash machine
b) your friends are nutters and live close enough to send home.

Once again Thanks Teresa and Bridget

Thankyou IGP and Greenfingers, I was going to make mince pies but we can't get the mincemeat on site so I decided jam and lemon curd tarts might be fun.

Hope you can get suet in Spain.I made some in the 90's when we lived in Puerto de Santa Maria near Cadiz, but had to leave the suet out and they were missing that extra fat,but things may be different now.Good luck!

I cannot buy suet where I live in Spain, rely on visitors bringing some? Not sure if we are supposed to import that. Oooooooh
