"The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning Wednesday for Kermadec Island, Tonga and New Zealand.
The warning was issued after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 shook the Kermadec Islands, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was centered 211 kilometers (131 miles) east of Raoul Island, Kermadec Islands, and 919 kilometers (571 miles) south of Tuku'alofa, Tonga, the survey said."

Hope everyone will be ok especially our NZ members.

The brief report I read in our newspaper online did not mention a tsunami warning, but it was just a 'breaking news' item about the earthquake.

I think the whole world is doomed!!

Huia who is not worried about any possible tsunami.

I have just had another look at the newspaper item. It now mentions a tsunami warning. Could hit Auckland at 10 a.m., just over 2 hours from now. I think I had better wear my gumboots when I go to Papakura this morning and Mangere after lunch, since they are nearer sea level than my home. I think it is probably more likely to hit the eastern side, than the western side, though.

Huia.

Hello Huia,

You did make me smile with the image of the gumboots. Enjoy your day and your lunch.

I am just awake. How's it going in NZ.

Wet and freezing here but the wet is coming from above and not beneath. Here's hoping the multitude heed the warning and stay away from the coastline. Not like the silly dodos who decided to go sightseeing the last time a tsunami was predicted in Oz.

Sounds like a good day to head for the hills. Which are probably covered with snow. You can't win whichever way you go.

The tsunami warning has been downgraded to a 'marine threat' but could be upgraded again.

Check those gumboots for meeces before you put them on Huia, I hate wellies as when I was little I put mine on and there was a huge spider waiting to tickle my toes. Those wellies came off quicker than they went on, and flew across the room with my Mum wondering what was going on.

Despite buying myself a pair of black ones with pink and blue spots, I still shudder when I think of those others and haven't worn mine yet!

Hope you stay safe and dry Huia, and the tsunami doesn't happen.

Well, I didnt need the gumboots in town. I know what you mean Liz. I am always worried that there might be a weta or a white tailed spider in mine. Many years ago dad was walking to work (car was being serviced) and he felt something in the toe of his shoe. He was almost running when he arrived at the office and took his shoe off. There was a weta in it. I dont know if you have seen a picture of a weta. They are about 2" long, with nasty looking sawteeth on their back legs. Ugh.

Huia. (sorry, off the topic of tsunami)
