Re nutty slack .... we always called it peanut brittle.

Nutty slack in our house was tiny bits of coal and coal dust put on top of the fire to damp it down at night, so it would keep it warm until morning.

Maybe this was just at our Scouse house :-)

Some of them my Dad would have said and he was Hampshire born and bred so maybe they are either universal or they have become so because of the services, he was in the RN. e.g. put the wood in the hole? were you born in a barn.

We say chucking it down and chuffed and we are both southerners, but OH was also in the RN.

One of my Dad's was 'wet as a mess deck scrubber' (i.e. daft)

Only ever lived down south... Essex, Sussex and Cambridgeshire and we use a lot of the same sayings

Just a query on the first saying of its chucking it down. Some of us still use the phrase 'Its 'ossin to slart' which is more descriptive of the weather when it begins to rain.

The 'ossin' meaning as in 'oss thi self' meaning 'get going' and 'slart' meaning anything where some liquid is involved such as a 'slart' of vinegar on thi' chips/ a splash.

I think it is a pity that regions loose their descriptive words. I mean, how does the rest of the world describe 'fruzzins'.lol-jl
