Compensation Claims

I have just read an article in the local paper regarding compensation paid as a result of injuries to pupils in our local schools last year

1. Compensation paid - £28,000
2. Council admin cost for handling the claims - £14,000
3. Fees to third parties solicitors - £56,000

No issue at all with 1. and can live with 2. as someone has to handle the paperwork

But 3.? We are here for you? Don't think so - we are here to make as much out of the system as we can, more like it.

but Councils surely have their own solicitors?

Yes, that was the £14k bit. No probs with that.

The £56k was paid out to the "We are here to help you....." mob supposedly acting for the claimants. 4 times what the claim came to? I don't think so.

That is the bit I object to, especially as I have had to pay this through my Council Tax.

solicitors and vets - a license to print money :-(

After a genuine accident at work, not serious, couple of weeks off work then back to work right as rain.
But Union solicitor pressed me to sue for negligence, it was not the case no lasting damage or lost pay so no reason to sue. Solicitor was a bit miffed cos he couldn't get any money.

I think to many people want money for nothing which makes it difficult for genuine claims.
But then that's just my opinion :-)

I had an accident at work - in a hospital - tripped over the rotten carpet in my office and broke my arm - that was Friday morning, spent Friday night in hospital to have it pinned and then plastered and was back at my desk on Monday morning - never even thought of compensation - wonder if it's too late now :-D

always the way - you'd probably get up even if you'd broken your leg - you feel so daft - I fell headlong a few months ago as I was entering Asda - of all places - I was so traumarised I ws just unable to get up and just lay there - there was a man sitting on the floor by the entrance and my head just about ended up in his lap!!! Think he was probably a patient from our local psychiatric hospital where I used to work. I felt like a dog - he kept patting my head and asking me "are you alright love!!!?" eventually some staff members came out, they had called an ambulance - they arrived and put screens around me and eventually I managed to stand - I think Asda was worried I was going to make a claim but for the life of me I could see nothng I had tripped over - felt an absolute wally - I refused a trip to casualty as I had my car with me, so I just sat till I regained my equilibrium and went home - but it sure shakes you up

if falling over was an olympic sport I'd be a gold medallist :-D :-D

AnnCardiff, I reckon I would get gold or silver. I don't even need anything there or in the way. I could fall over fresh air :-(

Oh Ann, the way you described that did make me laugh!! :-) It does shake you up though like you say.

Years ago I nipped out from work one lunchtime to a local bookshop to buy one of the Hannah Hauxwell books (remember her?). Well I started reading it before I was out of the shop and forgot the floor was split level and that there was a flight of 4 steps across the middle and I went a right purler off them and landed with a wallop on the hard floor at the bottom. The book flew out of my hand and slid along in front of me. I scrambled to my feet with bruised knees.......and pride, grabbed the book and limped out of the shop as fast as I could. Only then did I realise that one of my 3 inch heels was half ripped off!! I had to walk slowly and wobbly back to the office, where I managed to put a rubber band round my foot and shoe to hold the heel a bit better till I could drive home later! Nowadays folk would be creating about insufficient warning/marking of the steps etc and trying to make money from what was really my own fault!

About 5 years ago I just clipped the bumper of a slowing car in front as it pulled up and when the sun was blinding me through the screen. We exchanged the usual details and were both fine and not hurt. A few weeks later, whiplash was claimed for, which seemed ridiculous to me as there was no speed involved and the other driver was fine at the time.

My dog had to got the vets, my son paid the first bill, but i was later concerned that the dog had reopened the wound by scratching at it and took 3 weeks of healing back nearly to square one............

it cost me £52 for some treatment to the wounds itself and 10 days tablet dosage.
thankfully the wounds have closed up now and all signs of infection are gone.......

but yeah its never cheap to goto a vet, my mate had an old (12-13 years) lab gundog, and it was having trouble with arthritis and breathing, he had paid £900 in treatment and the vet was offering different tablets. at £44 a time to ease the breathing but the dogs breathing wasnt getting any easier so poor Jet went over the rainbow bridge..........

I took pictures of this dog at three months old, totally black, the only highlight was his eyes!!LOL
