They slept well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now early afternoon there ................ storm has passed, they've moved the BBQ back outside and made a pot of tea :-D

Now going to assess if any damage to their house and property ................ trees are down and blocking the street to both sides of them, but several houses away. It is a major road and bus route so hopefully they will be cleared soon.

I gather Dorian is heading to the UK, starting with Ireland and Wales, after it has battered Newfoundland

Bob .............. using the car battery to charge cell phones is great, but not when there are 150 kmph winds and tropical downpour, and you don't have a garage, or one that is not accessible from the house!

My daughter would have been blown straight across the road, over the rooftop of the house opposite and into the lake! Her husband, taller and heavier, wouldn't have faired much better!!!

Mary Poppins the 2nd :-D

Good news Sylvia that they are all safe :-)

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Sep 2019 19:41

Thank you, Emma

They have found no damage, and are now busy putting everything back outside, and getting back to normal. They have been told no power until at least Tuesday morning ........... so I guess the BBQ will be well used.

She thinks that her office in downtown Halifax will be open for business tomorrow!

Daughter is praising their local power company ............. the electricity came back on about 4 hours ago, about 8 pm their time.

There are still over 300,000 households in Nova Scotia alone without power, so a lot of hard work still to be done.

So pleased they're safe - minimal damage must be an extra bonus! :-D

Good to hear that they both came through relatively unscathed, Sylvia, and such a huge surprise for them that their power was restored so quickly.

Cyn .................. you're very kind, but if you look at the new thread I've put up ...............

I haven't been very organised recently!!

Hence you've got me on here for another year :-D

Bobtanian Report 9 Sep 2019 22:49

the idea is, that with a decent secondhand car battery, you keep it in a shed or somewhere. constantly charging off a solar panel.....BEFORE the storm hits.....

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Sep 2019 00:30

Bob .............. again works well if you have an attached garage with access from the house.

Shed ................ very unlikely to remain standing in 150 mph or kph winds

Walking outside to a detached garage or one without access from inside the house in anything over 100 kph winds .............. very unlikely and VERY unwise.

Taking a second hand car battery into the house also not advisable over here.

I think in this country we have very little concept of the ferocity of very high winds, the damage they can do, and the impossibility of staying upright!! As you say Sylvia the chances of a shed surviving would be remote!! We have friends in America who experience tornadoes, and to say that they are destructive and terrifying is an understatement!!!
So glad that your family are safe Sylvia and not too badly affected.

Yes, they are completely back to normal now ........ until the next one blows through!!
