Cats are a bit like children - they behave the way you allow and teach them to! Our current cat, the fifth to own us, is a sweetie. Got her from the RSPCA, 3 yrs old then, and never been outside, had no idea of what human contact or affection was, and we thought she couldn't mew because she was so silent. 5 years on she is a wonderful, loving, little furry friend, who greets us with a welcoming chirrup when we get home and is slowly teaching us to speak 'Cat' ! Her vocabulary is wide and varied - and quite different noises made depending on what she is trying to tell us. She always uses a litter tray (will come in from garden, use tray and then go out again!) never gets up on the work surfaces, and apart from the odd scratch on the wallpaper, is pretty well-behaved. Loves affection and gives it back in spades. Only drawback is all the fine white hair she sheds. Goodness knows why she isn't bald by now because I could knit several cats from the amount of hair the Dyson picks up!!! But wouldn't swap her for anything.

*sob sob* I haven't got a cat because my mean landlord says no pets, though he allows the downstairs flat 2 of them! I have always had cats until recently, so its strange being without them. First was Pixie, I shut his tail in the door so he ended up looking like a tabby manx. I was only 2! Then Smokey, a short haired grey, who had kittens. Smokey 2, grey and white, who would chase a football across the TV screen and look for it round the back if it went out of the picture. Patch, nutter and huge tabby and white tom. King of the neighbourhood, despite being neutered. Tammy, a feral tortoiseshell who decided to become domestic. Ali, black and white, disappeared, lots of black and whites disappeared in the area at the same time, suspicious. Bobby, black and white who decided to move to the farm up the road and stay there, though would come back to check on us now and then. Tubbs, my black cat, who loved to have his bum smacked, wierdo! He died at 12 from a liver tumour The pair, Bobby, a very pretty long haired black and white, who disappeared never to be seen again, and Rio, short haired black brother to Bobby, who waked out in disgust when I mentioned the vet. Finally, Murphy, a hyperactive tabby, who soon became f****** cat!, then cooking fat, then cookie! Sadly I had to re-home him when I moved here. Actually you never own a cat, they own you. Cats don't have owners, they have staff!

LOL BC! You're certainly right about them owning you and not the other way round. We all feel very privelidged (sp?) that Dylan has come to live with us! lol McAnne......I love verbal cats! One of my females was very vociferous....especially if we were ignoring her! lol. Dylan didn't speak to us much at first but he's finding his voice now!

Well - I have 4 cats .................. Max - a 17 yr old all black - totally hyper and neurotic due to thyroid disease - had one gland removed a few years ago, but now the other is gone and insurance wont cover it. Coco - a 9 yr old dark brown tortoiseshell - she came from a friends litter and I knew her mum & dad - she's as soft as sugar - always comes to fuss round me if I cry - loves her food and is like a little barrel lol ........ Louie - a black and white male Jazz - ginger, black & white tortoiseshell Both Louie and Jazz will be 3 yrs old this summer - they were born 3 weeks apart to two sister cats, so they are cousins, and I suspect half brother and sister, as their mums had identical litters. Louie is a timid little soul, but coming out of his shell - loves to stretch out and have his tummy tickled. Jazz is a precocious little mare and totally scatty - she's the one that comes in and sits on my shoulder - she's very 'verbal' lol They are my babies and I wouldn't be without them - grew up with cats and in my 43 years have only lived one year with out a cat when I first left home .............

Haven't read the other threads but want to mention my horrible cat Monday. She had me (I certainly did not have her!) for 22 years, I loved the ground she prowled on but boy was she bad! She used to drape herself on a different step of the stairs every morning, so I would trip over her. She was so beautiful that whenever somebody went to stroke her, she would purr.. look into their eyes, .and then bite. She's been gone about five years and boy, do I miss her. XX BC

I do like cats and always have, but I can appreciate the problems some people have with cats - what I fail to understand are the 'threats' against a living creature. Anyway, that's my view. My cat is 16 years old, white with blue eyes, and stone deaf. This is absolutely no drawback to her - when she was a kitten we flicked the light-switch and this became her signal to come home! No point shouting a deaf cat! Her stories could fill a book and I don't have time to list them anyway - but her latest escapade was to go up the chimney. Yes, that's correct! Our 16yr old white cat tried climbing the chimney - now she is white and black! Christine

Both my cats are indoor cats, but they go out supervised twice a day, both wear collars with bells when out with us,one even likes to go on a lead,Believe it or not:-)) Its True Honestlol We have trained them to stay in our garden, they never do their business in the garden, the male sometimes will have a little wee in the garden if he smells the scent of another cat, I encourage this because it does keep other cats from using our garden as their toilet. If they need to go while out with us they run into the house and use the tray, its what their use to. sometimes the male will try and venture off down the road but we chase him back in,he knows hes been a bad boylol you can train cats but you need to start them from kitten hood both of mine are happy cats.:-))

Hi Jeanette, I notice the title to the other thread has now been changed which is good. Maybe 'upsetting' was too strong a word though - in reality it does take a bit more than a thread title to upset me lol! Liz

I have a wonderful tabby, her name is maddy and she is 7yrs old. She has a very healthy appetite and is very loving towards me, and she is definately a females cat. Not keen on men at all. She brings me pressies in occasionally, usually moths that she likes catching. Maddy is very protective of her home and garden and if she sees another cat enter the garden than all hell breaks out. We got her from a rescue shelter, I went into the pen to have a look at her and she jumped on my shoulders and did a proper show for me-so we had to have her. She's a very important part of our family and is treated with the upmost respect. cat-herine xx

Hi Liz I'm sure Valley's thread wasn't meant to be upsetting. She just has a terror of cats in the way that I have a terror of spiders! LOL We've always had cats right from me being a little girl and I can't imagine not having one. When I lived at home we also had dogs, guinea pigs, chickens and a duck! lol. But I was never drawn to them as much as I am to cats. Dylan was chasing his tail last night. It's great to watch isn't it? Then when he catches it he sinks his teeth into it! lol. We think he's about 2 years old and he's a big black and white fella with a very pretty face for a boy. I think he might be a good match for Julie's Mynx. We'll have to see if we can get them fixed up on a date! LOL

Dizzy Lizzy 205090 Report 21 Jan 2007 12:18

Thank you for starting this thread. I found the other one rather upsetting so it is good to redress the balance. I have 2 18 month old boys, Laurel & Hardy. Laurel (known as Loz) is black with a few white bits and has always been an anxious cat. He was hit by a car in November and sustained a fractured pelvis which has now thankfully healed, but it has knocked his confidence even more. He goes out for 30 minutes or so in the morning but spends the rest of the day following me around the house. He is a bit daft and sometimes chases his tail which is hilarious to watch. Hardy is ginger and white, and a very cool cat. He likes to go out as soon as possible in the morning (I keep them in at night for safety) and stays out for much of the day. He is a bit of a 'nibbler' though - he will nibble feet, legs, arms etc if they are not covered, so I have to lock the boys in the garage at night otherwise we are woken by his nibbling at 3am. My boys are trained not to go onto kitchen or dining room surfaces (and they never ever do), and use their litter trays rather than the garden. They have brought so much pleasure to my life, and the lives of my children, I wish we had had cats before. Liz :-)
