We've just disposed of our microwave,it has given up after 20+ years, Now looking for new one but would like it to be much smaller. Someone has told me that if your m/wave is old it should be checked out for safety reasons.True? Would someone rec.a make for me please. Just an uncomplicated model, no grill. Thanks Mau

Things like washing machines don't last nearly as long. My nan still has her washing machine from before I was born, and in the past 10 years we've gone through about 4. My grandad's car lasted him for YEARS but nowadays there seems to be something wrong with them all the time.

Carolyn Report 15 Jan 2007 22:37

My microwave just celebrated it's 21st birthday at christmas, like some others that have been mentioned it is big and brown and I'm secretly hoping it will blow up soon so I can get a nice neat white one which will fit on the wall instead of taking up half my worktop but I'm sure it's eventual replacement will not last half as long. My first electric kettle lasted nearly 20 years but since then I've lost count of the number I've had, they seem to last just longer than the 12 month guarantee and then die. They certainly don't make things like they used to! Carolyn

I did have an all singing/all dancing Brother sewing machine that would have been 20 years old this year had I not knocked it off a shelf and smashed it this afternoon. Why did I decide to remove a fitted wardrobe? Louise

I just want to add---a friend of mine used to work for a computer retailer, not in uk,but it is possible & probable! Parts that 'were not working' were brought into the workshop to be repaired, and a lit match was dropped onto the board to fabricate a part had 'burned out',causing the owner, when shown the damage to buy an upgrade--food for thought.

I know mum has a record player that must be 30 years old - still works perfectly. My microwave is a Proline (Comet own brand) we bought in 1989 - I too keep hoping it will give up so I can get a shiny new one! Mum also has a clock/radio/tv alarm (2 and a half inch b/w screen!) beside her bed which still works - that must be about 20 years old too! I'm sure she has other things, but I can't think of them right now! Maz. XX

I have a siemens electric mantle clock.Bakelite case, It was discarded by its previous owner in 1963, all it needed was a clean and a little lube. I have reason to suspect that it is pre-war, have only seen one other like it. also have a Champion record player I bought around 1955, cost 14 1/2 guineas... and have a teasmaid, still in its box.. which is probably 1970.ish not actually using it, so it doesnt quite count, methinks.. I have a Bush wireless in a sort of ridged Bakelite or possibly plastic from the 1950's. It has one of those twisted fabric cords and a 2 round pin square plug. The dial lists Home Service, Light programme and Third programme. Listened to The Goon Show and Children's Hour on it! Rosemary(Essex)

I still have an electric hand mixer that I use daily for mashing the spuds. My hands are riddled with arthur ritus lol It was a wedding pressie in 1968. My ironing board was bought on east lane market London for 19/11d and was an engagment pressie in 1966. My son once gave it a new paint job in the garden. We had a red garden wall for years!!!
