I remember Peter, Jane and Pat the dog (who I think was a grogeous red setter), but the books I remember most were about a little boy called Thomas. These had titles like 'Thomas gets dressed', but my favourite was 'Thomas bakes a cake', because Mum used to read it to me, then we'd make cakes! |

I remember John and Janet from boots my Grandmother had at home left over from my Uncles school days (he could read the newspaper at 5). At Home I used Ladybird books to learn to read (The little red hen, Sleeping beauty, Snow White and Rose Red, Princess and the Pea - etc...). I remember Peter and Jane too as Nan bought me so many books and read with me after school. Mam bought me books on Topsy and Tim And Happy Families. At School I used Ginn - they had bout 14 levels, I reached the end of level 6 when I left infants at 7 and gor put back to level 4 in juniors becase the teachers wouldn't believe me. We scrapped reading to the teacher in Yr4/J2 but we kept the books in the library so I found I could read leves 12 and 13 in Yr5/J3. My brother (7 yrs yonger than me) Used a rainbow scheme but I found it patronising when I read his books, first one went along the lines of Jim Spot Jim and Spot Jim is a boy Spot is a Dog Jim and Spot are friends |

I could read from a young age.It was and still is a favorite pastime of mine. I'm sure it was Dick and Jane with Pat the dog,who was a lovely red setter. I was the odd one out at school and some way through being in what is now yr1 the system changed. We were taught by sounding out the letters. This was something i could never do.I could read them but not sound the letters. As we didn't read in reception class it was all play,so none of the teachers realised i could read. They sent a letter to my parents saying i needed extra help at home to help me read.To say mum wasn't pleased would be laying. She managed to book an afternoon of off work and picked me up from school (this is why i remember, i was a latch key kid at the age of 6). The teacher had a registar on her desk, mum told me to read it to the teacher.which i did,the names first, then middle names ,birthdates etc. To say the teacher was a bit surprised was really something else but it didn't help. She said i could read read properly cause i couldn't sound my letters. I learnt along side my now 13 yr old daughter,to sound them out i mean. Oooops that got a bit long, lol. |

I remember Janet and John.....and the one with the dog Spot....they always seemed to be skipping about all over the place....I could read before I went to school at four and a half....and we sat on long benches with desks attached and an inkwell in each......we learned by rote with the teacher tapping on the board.....especially times tables.... The milk was delivered in small bottles and put round the fireguard in front of the open fire in the winter to unfreeze....I always remember the ice sticking out of the tops of the bottles, and the little silver lids sitting on the top of the ice like caps.....still love my milk warm.... |

Oh Wide Range Readers - Janet and John, do remember all those, I must have learned to read quickly and taught my younger brothers cos the middle one was a bit slow at it and the other liked to play schools with his big sis. Reading is still my favourite pastime. |

I had Peter and Jane books. Were the Roger red hat ones the ones about pirates? I can remember books with pirates in and a griffin but can't remeber what they were called. Jackiexx |

Can't remember the books we used back in early fifties but I do remember, about 20 years later, sitting every night with my sons and helping them to read Roger Red Hat, Billy Blue Hat, Johnny &Jennifer Yellow Hat etc. and was it the Village with Three Corners? I remember one evening reading Billy Blue Hat (my son Bill looked like him!) and either his mum had shrunk his hat or his coat but it was the expression on his face in the picture that just got me and I had hysterics, much to the confusion of the lads. A great favourite of theirs was the 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' with all the sound effects and creepy tune from 'Childrens Favourites' - I'm a troll, fol-de-rol......' Now my grandson in is being inducted into the joys of Mr. Happy, Mr. Jelly........ He's only 18th months old but you can't start reading to them too soon. |

Thanks for your replies everyone - it was really interesting. Stirred some memories! Hadn't been on the computer snce yesterday afternoon was amazed to see the thread was still on the front page. Jackie (think I've got the right name) mentioned the pirates - I think that scheme was called The 3 Pirates - there was Roderick the Red, Greg the Green and Ben the Blue and the Griffin. Roger Red Hat and co were from the 1, 2 3 and Away scheme. Bye for now Kate |
