oh dear, crisis time! Jamie left the cage open by mistake and Lightning has gone walkies. Can't find him anywhere. Have dotted some dried food and some apple about. Made a 'trap' with a saucepan and a ramp lol. Has anyone got a failsafe technique please?! 2 very sad kids at the moment. Maz. XX

Toothfairy Report 7 Apr 2006 19:08

Try keeping all windows and doors shut, leave the cage on the floor over night and they usually climb in of their own accord.. I had one do a bunk , she spent the day sleeping inside my sofa..I heard the scratching as she woke up at night (so keep listening tonight for clues!!) they can smell their bedding and crawl back in after their adventure...x Really hope it turns up okay! Find a local cat and let it find him? And yes that is a sensible idea!! Clicquot found next doors hamster 4 days after he went missing upstairs here.... and never hurt him!! xx

I had that on a nightly basis a few years ago, flipping thing escaped and disappeared into the fire and along inside the wall, drove my ex mad until he got so fed up and turned the fire on to get it out, it did work and hamster wasnt harmed!! But unless it wants to come out, you will have a job to catch it, sorry!!!!!

Maz - take it from me this works! Hamsters are nocturnal....so tonight, leave a bucket in the room where the hamster escaped. Put some torn up paper (or straw) in the bottom of the bucket so the hamster gets a soft landing. On top of the paper put a carrot. On the outside of the bucket put a pile of bricks. Hamster will smell carrot, climb bricks, fall into bucket, but be unable to climb out again. You should find him happily munching in there by morning. Honest! Dee x

My brother in law had the same prob all the time and it only happened to ours once. As everyone else has said, just leave the cage open make sure you shut all your external doors and window, make sure he can get through the internal doors to his cage. If you have a cat flap even if not in use...block it up and close the toilet seat lid and put a note on it for the others to do the same thing. Also keep your washing machine and tumble drier closed. Don't forget to check your laundry bin. My inlaws and I just left food in the cage to encourage it back to home, hopefully he will then just settle down. Don't forget to keep us informed. Hope it all turns out well. Our 3 were in tears even the 13 year old !! Best of luck Pen x
