Tolkein - the person that wrote the book(s). The book is an absolute classic, much loved by several generations, and the film are a great adaptation of that - throughly enjoyable, well acted (on the whole) and visially stunning. Whats not to like ? (OK they're a bit long...)

Its actually a book that was written to be understood on two levels - as an intellectual logical adult and as a child reading an adventure fantasy. My son read them all when he was 7 going on 8 and loved them then , and has re-read them and enjoyed them on a higher level now at 25. He is really lucky as he has seen some of the areas where the movies were filmed. And Grampa Jim - is it a book Tolkein you are getting lol

She - lucky boy indeed. I read them when I was about 12 I think. Have to admit that the hobbit was actually my favorite - an easier read lol

The younger the better kb - they say you're only as old as the man you feel .... Paul - I love the hobbit too - do you think Peter Jackson will ever make THAT into a book - dragon included!! Wish he would! Maz. XX

remakes are usually a bit rubbishy I'll agree with you there - they've tried it once already with King Kong, but I have a little more confidence this time. Am also looking forward to the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (another of my favourite books as a kid) thats coming out soon - directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. Hope he makes a better job than he did with Planet o the Apes as that was... disappointing.
