Brenda - that is the one reason I vote and have drummed it into my daughter from she could vote and was not interested. Ann

If you are tempted not to vote, think of the Sufragetts and all they went thru to get votes for women, can we let them down brenda

Could do worse - just think of the voting system as in America - it's just like a fairground. George Bush bah! It seems all the best politicians are either too old or dead. There must be a good younger one somewhere. Sylvia xxx

Someone with common sense, the guts to stick to their party's manifesto (no matter which close friend abuses it) and honesty (is that possible with a politican). A pipe dream I am afraid. Ann

We badly need a "None of the Above" candidate and compulsory voting. As it is, if there isn't a party whose policies you agree with, you are effectively disenfranchised.

Sylvia, I would like to see someone who can contol immigration and crime, and put a stop to the concrete jungles this government are proposing in the south-east, Cambridge/Essex and Oxfordshire. I like Boris Johnson too, he makes me laugh, but not as Prime Minister.... Enoch Powell came ahead of his time. I would vote for him if he were here now. Kathy

CB, I agree with you about Boris. Even a trained chimp would be better than what we have.

Shirley Williams!!! YES I agree brenda

Hi Jo, In some ways I agree with what you say but neither Enoch Powell nor Margaret Thatcher ever said what I was thinking. Gwynne

Geoff Report 31 Jan 2005 15:59

I doubt Thatcher would get in (or stay in) these days. The muck-raking that would take place regarding her son's wealth would see to that. Politicians twenty years ago had a much easier ride.

I'd like to see somebody who dared to stand up and say what the rest of us are thinking. Somebody who is strong, who dos'nt tell lies and sticks by what they have said. Instead of helping the rich, do more for the poorer people. Winston Churchill, Enoch Powell and Margaret Thatcher were all strong people in my opinion. I look at all the parties, but I don't see anyone who measures up. Jo.

I suppose the ones who cannot be bothered to vote should be persuaded to do so. Think of the brave Iraqis voting! Sylvia xxx

Sylvia, I've always voted too, but I think too many people (my Mother, for instance) just don't think it's worth bothering, so we get very low attendances at polling stations. Apathy rules above all, it seems. CB >|<

Hi Sylvia, Of course I vote. I've voted at every election, general and local, since I came of age. Gwynne

syljo Report 31 Jan 2005 15:16

I hope that you all go to vote, otherwise you cannot complain who gets in. Sylvia xxx

One name has just sprung to mind - Boris Johnson. He'd probably be as useless as Blair, but at least he's a lot funnier! (as seen on HIGNFY) I also expect that Labour will win next time, but as long as they're not led by John Prescott, we probably know what we're in for. Better the devil you know ... CB >|<

Sylvia,Glad you liked him,And he was,nt afraid to put his hand in his pocket when it was his turn for a roud of drinks. An extremely nice, pleasant and clever man,Hal.

Guinevere Report 31 Jan 2005 14:59

Hi, If I could choose anyone I'd have David Owen or Shirley Williams - maybe Paddy Ashdown. But given the choices available I'll have to choose Tony as I suspect most people will at the next election despite some of the views expressed here. Gwynne

syljo Report 31 Jan 2005 14:56

Yes, Harold I agree with you Maggie was somebody who clamped down on the Unions, not before it was time. Enoch Powell, a wonderful man. He foresaw things that are happening now. No wonder he spent his last years in Eireland. Sylvia xxx

Many people may not have liked Margaret Thatcher, but she had more guts and backbone than any of the wasters we have now. My choice would be for someone who I knew Personally,But unfortunately is dead.Thats "Enoch Powel" he was a man of Integrity, more than you can say about the "Shower"we have today. Hal.
