As a spin off of Terence's light hearted thread about The Ilkley Moor bar tat thread earlier - what songs your Grandparents used to like to sing you were your favourites. Here's One;- The Church by Fred W Leigh I'm in a nice bit of trouble, I confess; Somebody with me has had a game. I should by now be a proud and happy bride, But I've still got to keep my single name. I was proposed to by Obadiah Binks In a very gentlemanly way; Lent him all my money So that he could buy a home, And punctually at twelve o'clock to-day- Chorus: There was I, waiting at the church, Waiting at the church, waiting at the church; When I found he'd left me in the lurch. Lor, how it did upset me! All at once, he sent me round a note Here's the very note, this is what he wrote: 'Can't get away to marry you today, My wife, won't let me!' Lor, what a fuss Obadiah made of me When he used to take me in the park! He used to squeeze me till I was black and blue, When he kissed me he used to leave a mark. Each time he met me he treated me to port, Took me now and then to see the play; Understand me rightly, When I say he treated me, It wasn't him but me that used to pay. Just think how disappointed I must feel, I'll be off me crumpet very soon. I've lost my husband - the one I never had! And I dreamed so about the honeymoon. I'm looking out for another Obadiah, I've already bought the wedding ring, There's all my little fal-the-riddles Packed up in my box Yes, absolutely two of ev'rything. Who else has some, I can think of loads!! Jacquie

Another one! In Dublin's fair city Where girls are so pretty Twas there that I first met Sweet Molly Malone As she wheeled her wheelbarrow Through streets broad and narrow Mussels, Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh Alive, alive oh, alive, alive oh, Crying, Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh Now she was a fishmonger And sure twas no wonder For so were her mother Ad father before And they each Wheeled their barrows Through streets broad and narrow Crying, Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh She died of a fever And no one could save her And that was the end Of sweet Molly Malone Now her ghost Wheels her barrow Through streets Broad and narrow Crying, Cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh

...I remember something about Albert going to the Zoo and being ate by a lion...

JG70 Report 9 Nov 2005 23:02

This one used to amuse me,- I am a broken-hearted milkman, in grief I'm arrayed Through keeping of the company of a young servant maid. Who lived on board and wages the house to keep clean In a gentleman's family near Paddington Green. Chorus: She was as beautiful as a butterfly and proud as a Queen, Was pretty little Polly Perkins of Paddington Green. She'd an ankle like an antelope and a step like a deer, A voice like a blackbird, so mellow and clear, Her hair hung in ringlets so beautiful and long, I thought that she loved me but I found I was wrong. Chorus: When I'd rattle in the morning and cry 'Milk below!', At the sound of my milk cans her face she did show, With a smile upon her countenance and a laugh in her eye. If I'd thought that she loved me I'd have laid down to die. Chorus: When I asked her to marry me she said 'Oh what stuff', And told me to drop it, for she'd had quite enough. Of my nonsense -- At the same time, I'd been very kind, But to marry a milkman she didn't feel inclined. Chorus: 'The man that has me must have silver and gold, A chariot to ride in and be handsome and bold. His hair must be curly as any watch-spring, And his whiskers as big as a brush for clothing.' Chorus: The words that she uttered went straight through my heart I sobbed and I sighed, and I straight did depart. With a tear on my eyelid as big as a bean I bid farewell to Polly and to Paddington Green. Chorus: In six months she married, this hard-hearted girl, But it was not a Wi-count, and it was not a Nearl, It was not a 'Baronite', but a shade or two wuss, It was a bow-legged conductor of a tupenny bus. Chorus: My Grandad onlyknew acouple of the verses though!

Albert and the Lion - I remember my Dad on about that one! (Marriot Edgar) There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool That's noted for fresh air and fun And Mr. and Mrs. Ramsbottom Went there with young Albert, their son. A fine little lad were young Albert, All dressed in his best, quite a swell. He'd a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle; The finest that Woolworth's could sell. They didn't think much to the ocean, The waves they were piddlin' and small. There were no wrecks and nobody drownded, 'Fact, nothin' to laugh at at all! So, seeking for further amusement, They paid, and went into the zoo, Where they'd lions and tigers and camels And cold ale and sandwiches, too. There were one great big lion called Wallace Whose nose was all covered with scars; He lay in a som-no-lent posture With the side of 'is face on the bars. Now Albert 'ad 'eard about lions- 'Ow they was ferocious and wild; To see lion lyin' so peaceful Just didn't seem right to the child. So straightway the brave little feller, Not showin' a morsel of fear, Took 'is stick with the 'orse's 'ead 'andle And stuck it in Wallace's ear. You could see that the lion din't like it, For givin' a kind of a roll, 'E pulled Albert inside the cage with 'im And swallered the little lad - 'ole! Now Mother 'ad seen this occurrence, And not knowin' what to do next, She 'ollered 'Yon lion's et Albert!' An' Father said 'Ee, I am vexed.' They complained to an animal keeper Who said 'My, wot a nasty mis'ap; Are you sure it's your boy 'e's eaten?' Pa said, 'Am I sure? There's 'is cap!' The manager 'ad to be sent for; 'E came and 'e said 'Wot's to-do?' Ma said 'Yon lion's et Albert, And 'im in 'is Sunday clothes, too!' Father said 'Right's right, young feller- I think it's a shame and a sin To 'ave our son et by a lion And after we paid to come in.' The manager wanted no trouble; He took out his purse right away, Sayin' ''Ow much to settle the matter?' Pa said 'Wot do you usually pay?' But Mother 'ad turned a bit awkward When she saw where 'er Albert 'ad gone. She said 'No, someone's got to be summonsed!' So that was decided upon. And off they all went to p'lice station In front of a Magistrate chap; They told what 'ad 'appened to Albert And proved it by showing 'is cap. The Magistrate gave 'is opinion That no one was really to blame, And 'e said that 'e 'oped the Ramsbottoms Would 'ave further sons to their name. At that Mother got proper blazin': 'And thank you, sir, kindly,' said she- 'Wot, spend all our lives raisin' children To feed ruddy lions? Not me!'

Not a grandparent but my father: PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF, and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. OH PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail Jackie kept a lookout perched on PUFF's gigantic tail, Noble kings and princes would bow when'er they came, Pirate ships would lower their flags when PUFF roared out his name OH, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, A dragon lives forever but not so little boys Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar. His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain, PUFF no longer went to play along the cherry lane. Without his life-long friend, PUFF could not be brave, So PUFF that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee

Dad again: As I was slowly passing An orphan's home one day I stopped for just a little while To watch the childern play Alone a boy was standing And when I asked him why He turned with eyes that could not see And he began to cry I'm nobody's child I'm nobody's child Just like the flowers I am growing wild I've got no mammy's kisses I've got no, no daddy's smile Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child No mammy's arms to hold me Or soothe me when I cry 'Cause sometimes I feel so lonesome I wish that I could die I'd walk the streets of Heaven Where all the blind can see And just like all the other kids there'd be a home for me I'm nobody's child I'm nobody's child Just like the flowers I'm, I'm growing wild I've got no mammy's kisses I've got no, no daddy's smile Nobody wants me I'm nobody's child

Stel What a friend, what a pal Only now I can see How you dreamed and you planned on me I never knew what a mother goes through There's nothing that you'd daren't do. Pal of my cradle days I've needed you always Since I was a baby upon your knee You've sacrificed everything for me I stroke the old gold of your hair And I put the silver thread there I don't know anyway I could ever repay Pal of my cradle days Greatest Friend, Dearest Pal It was me who cost you Every sorrow and heartache you knew And the old face so fair, I have wrinkled with care I blessed every line that is there. Pal of my cradle days I've needed you always Since I was a baby upon your knee You've sacrificed everything for me I stroke the old gold of your hair And I put the silver thread there I don't know anyway I could ever repay Pal of my cradle days

Found the lyrics to The Titanic one I was trying to remember on Terences thread! Oh, they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue. For they thought it was a ship that water would never go through. It was on its maiden trip, that an iceberg hit the ship. It was sad when the great ship went down. Chorus: It was sad, so sad. It was sad, so sad. It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the....) Uncles and aunts, little children lost their pants. It was sad when the great ship went down. They were not far from the shore, 'bout a thousand miles or more, When the rich refused to associate with the poor. So they threw them down below, where they were the first to go. It was sad when the great ship went down. Repeat chorus Oh, the heroes saved the weak, as the ship began to leak. And the band on deck played on. With, 'Nearer my God to Thee', they were swept into the sea. It was sad when the great ship went down. Repeat chorus Oh they built a sister ship, Called the S.S. Kunatah And they knew it was a ship that would never get very far. So, they christened it with GOP, And it sunk with a Ker-Plop! It was glad when the sad ship went down. Repeat chorus Additional Verses They threw the lifeboats over, in the dark and stormy sea. And the band began to play 'Oh Give Thy Soul To Thee.' Little children wept and cried as they left their mother's side. Repeat chorus Oh the moral of this story, the moral of this song, Is that one shouldn't go where he does not belong. For in the good Lord's eyes, you're as good as other guys, It was sad when the great ship when down. Repeat chorus Oh the moral of this story, is plain as you can see. Never trust a sailor on the high sea. He'll call you honey-darling, and say that he'll be true, But when the ship goes down he'll say the hell/heck with you. Repeat chorus After last chorus, there is an extra 'so sad, too bad' spoken-sung, and this: Kerplunk It sunk Hunk a junk In the sea without me Luckily Hee hee hee.

Hush, little baby, don't say a word. Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird And if that mockingbird won't sing, Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring And if that diamond ring turns brass, Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass And if that looking glass gets broke, Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat And if that billy goat won't pull, Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull And if that cart and bull fall down, You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town
