Hi Gerry

Do you have any idea how old Constance was when she had Pauline.......and when and where she was born?

Do you know if she had a middle name?

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 15 Feb 2016 14:00

I see Pauline's birth was registered in Basford. (Allsopp)

There is this marriage registered in Basford in 1951

Gerry

Gerry Report 15 Feb 2016 14:35

Hi Prickly

You have answered you own questions LOL.

No, we don't know her age. The person that adopted Pauline said she thought the mother Constance was quite young. The adopter was about 33 at the time.

The middle name question is a difficult one. No middle name was ever mentioned for Constance but I find it to be fairly common for middle names to be added or excluded on various documents.

At the moment I am betting on our Constance being the one born in 1916 in Basford. I was hoping the 1951 marriage would be the correct one (I am waiting for the cert) but your revelation about the death makes it highly unlikely as I think the 1911 birth probably makes her too old

We do know that Pauline was born in the Porchester Nursing Home Mapperley Nottingham and that when Constance registered the birth June 1940 she was living at 26A Kent Rd Mapperley Notts.

I cannot find Constance or the address in the 1939 register.

As you can see I have quite a bit of info but I cannot identify the right Constance.

Thank you for your interest Prickly

Gerry :-)

Hi Rambling Rose

Thanks. I have just been looking at shipping details. They came back to UK 10/1/1927 and went back to Cape Town 4/2/1927.

Thanks to a lady by the name of Wendy this afternoon I now know that Austin died in Cape Town in 1953. Also a Constance Hamp-Adams (nee Allsop) died in SA 29/10/92. She was born 15/5/1916.

It looks almost certain that I have been chasing the wrong Constance. I chose this one because she was born in Nottingham at ABOUT the right time.

I am going to have to look further afield now and look at the other 11 Constance Allsops within my time frame

The good news is - I have now eliminated one possible!!

I might be inclined to have another go with that address. It existed 1911 and still does, so must be on a register somewhere! Might not help, but you never know.

That's the frustrating thing, that Constance was so close to the address.

Belper is Belper although in Derbyshire,,Derby is Derby ,,,,Chesterfield is covered by Derbyshire.!!its a big shire.
so a death in Derby would be more central to Derby, :-D :-D.

What was given as Constances job.?

Gerry

Gerry Report 15 Feb 2016 23:15

Hi again

I now think anyone born before about 1920 is going to be too old because having spoken to Pauline, Constance's daughter, again she says her adopted mother thought Constance seemed very young and scared in court. The adopted mother was 33 at the time.

Constance job was "tobacconist's shop assistant, which I would assume was relatively close to 26A Kent Rd.

Someone is checking the electoral reg and another the land registry.

Its amazing how helpful you all are

It's not the right area but as the 1939 reg has just been opened on FMP am sending a PM

Kay????

Kay???? Report 16 Feb 2016 11:43

So,,the lady was actually born in the area of **Mapperley Park** in Nottingham and not Mapperley over nr Ilkeston which is edg of Derbyshire,

Basford would be the reg district.

Has the lady applied to Nottingham Social Services for any adoption paperwork they may hold.?.from the time it was handled by Welfare but SService took over custodianship of their records late 1960s.this is the best route as as scant the paper/s maybe there will be more details than can be gleened from the BC in these cases, she may have even been a married woman.?

Gerry

Gerry Report 16 Feb 2016 13:12

Hi Kay

Pauline, the adoptee was born a the nursing home in Mapperley Notts and Constance, her mother was living in the same area at the time. Where Constance was born is not known.

Social Services could not find any info, which was the same for me in Worcester.

Constance was single

Kent Road is in Carlton and is close to Mapperley Golf Club.

On 1939 Register in September 1939 at 26a Kent Rd Carlton.

Eric J Douglas 15 Sep 1871 Wholesale Fruit And Potato Marker Lorry Driver Heavy Worker

Ivy A E Douglas 02 Sep 1912 Unpaid Domestic Duty

Sorry, this record is officially closed. Check if you can open a closed record

They are married, am sceptical about Eric's 1871. The years on the original are 12 for Ivy and there's a couple of squiggles above Eric's. It's been transcribed as a 7, I think it's a 1 therefore 1911. Squiggles seemed to refer to their neighbour.

Yes it is 1911 birth. Found out he married 1935, she was a Sonnell but think there's an error. Can't find her as Sonnell but Bonnell.

The child is a daughter born 1938.

At No 26 is a family named Green. He's retired.

Wonder if the Douglas family were related or friends? She may have just known the area.

Hope this helps :-)
