My name is Michelle Hoffman, I am enquiring on behalf of my mother, Wilma Hoffman (nee Moffatt) about her family.

Wilma was born in 1952 in Glasgow, to William Neilson Moffatt and Margaret Bradley. When my mother was three her father was killed in a motorcycle accident (William Neilson Moffatt), he was only 25. Margaret Bradley remarried David Hudson, and my mother took on her stepfather’s name of Hudson ( although she was never officially adopted).

In 1960 the family moved from Scotland to Australia, then New Zealand and then back to Australia. My mother has never known anything about her father William or her father’s family all her life. My mother is now 65 years old and wants to find out about her heritage, and find her biological family from her father’s side, similarly I know nothing of my maternal grandfather or his family.

The certificate would give the names of both of his parents & where they were married. Although the birth indexes don’t give mother’s maiden name, it might be possible to suggest siblings for your grandfather based on the marriage year of his own parents & area.

Using Camlachie as a filter, and year range 1920-1940, there are 4 other birth results. Not all of them are likely to be his siblings, but some could be.

I am not seeing a likely death in Scotland for Gertrude or Richard so perhaps the family moved to England or even emigrated.

Thanks for the information, i have sent off for the Birth Certificate of Richard MC, i have a feeling this is his brother, if so maybe i can try and trace any of his children, do you have any advice on how to trace living people once i determine that he is famliy?

The fact that there is no death showing in Scotland for Gertrude, my opinion is that the family moved from Scotland.

No deaths showing for Moffatt with mmn McAllister.

ArgyllGran - what’s the relevance of the ER codes? I’ve never delved that deep into SP.

There is another Moffatt birth in the right area, Milton, in 1943. Possibly a grandchild of Robert and Gertrude. There is a marriage in the 60s so I'll send that by PM as the person is probably still living. The marriage was in the Kelvin district, so again the right area.

I have absolutely no idea what the codes mean!

I expect S is for Scottish - but apart from that I have no clue.

Curiosity got the better of me! I've looked at Richard's marriage certificate. We can eliminate that death ArgyllGran.

Richard, aged 25 a Merchant Seaman son of Thomas also a Merchant Seaman (deceased) and Catherine m.s. Derby now McIntyre.

Gertrude, aged 20, a tearoom waitress, daughter of Samuel McAllister, Railway Wagon Shunter and Margaret m.s. Burnett.

Marriage took place at 149 Onslow Drive conducted by minister of Guthrie Memorial Chuch, Calton. Witnesses James Rae and Elizabeth Lovatt.

Have found Samuel and Margaret on the 1911 but Gertrude isn't with them.
