Hi, I really don't go on here very often, but looked by chance today. I would need to do a bit of research into my trees, but I have Taylors, Tofts & Shaws all from the Manchester region in my tree, along with Perkins - do you have any of those?

I don't think we are talking about the same families, but there is always a slim chance, and it is fun, after all, to try and make connections.

I will have a look at my people and see if any of your names connect to any of mine.

Happy Sunday

David

Thank you very much Erika. The marriage year of Mona and Edward was a clerical error and then I put Broadbent for Dougjas's wife when it is actually Janet Ogden's maiden name of course.
I shall order Charlotte's D/Cert and will now start bring proactive on the site for my own research.
You and others in this thread have been stars and my family members who knew May are intrigued and grateful for the knowledge so far gleaned.
May will now have a place in our own family history as she was such an important part of it.
Thank You
David :-)

Sorry, David, but no-one connected is likely to see your post

Be pro-active - start looking for connections yourself.

Several corrections need to be made to your summary, David.

I haven't time to check it all at the moment (and anyway you can double-check the details yourself from the records posted on this thread) , but for starters:

Edward and Mona married in 1930, not 1939.

Douglas married Margaret Weldon, not Margaret Broadbent.

"It is quite possible that Mona Ogden, as she then was, cared for and brought up May" - - - May was living with her father in 1939, when she was 18/19, so wasn't estranged from her birth family until after that. Of course, for all we know, the Taylor and Ogden families may perhaps already have known each other, when May was younger.

"Their mother, Charlotte died in 6/1921 aged 39 about 3 months after May’s birth" -

No, not necessarily.
Charlotte's death record says June 1921 - but that just means her death was registered some time in the April/May/June quarter of 1921. She could have died at any time between May's birth and the end of June. You'd need to buy the death cert to know the exact date of death.
I know May was born in March, but her birth wasn't registered until at least 1st April, and the same may have applied to Charlotte's death:

Thank You Again Everyone for your invaluable research.I've learned a lot from you.

I would just now to add a complete update to my initial post showing what information has been achieved.

David. :-)

OF POSSIBLE INTEREST TO Surnames TAYLOR,TOFT and OGDEN probably in the Oldham and Middleton areas.

Concerning MAY TAYLOR)spinster) b.Oldham 24/3/1921 d.Oldham 4/1998,aged 77 yrs.
My ‘Aunty’ May was ‘adopted’ by my family in the early 1950’s and remained a much loved person until her death in 1998.
She rarely if ever spoke of her own family, the only information I gleaned was from herself when I was including her in my first family tree,at the tender age of 8 . Subsequent recent information came from Oldham Council Burial Records, and some good research help from Genes Reunited researchers.
I would be pleased if anyone might be interested in this information that would perhaps help in their own research.
For me,it would show that she wouldn’t be forgotten as might happen when I and others of my generation pass away.

At first I thought that May Taylor was born to EDWARD TAYLOR (1903-1940 (buried 27/4/40-record no.6142 at Lees Cemetery, Thomas Street,Oldham-Grave No. 2C94 and:
MONA TAYLOR (nee OGDEN) 1902-1953 buried 31/3/53-record no. 7472 at Lees Cemetery in the same grave as above.
Mona and Edward married in 1939 at Christ Church,Glodwick,Oldham.
Both addresses at death stated as 60 New Earth Street,Lees,Oldham
It is not known if Mona and Edward had any offspring,or from their previous marriages if indeed they had been married previously to others……

EDWARD ,according to 1911 census when he was 8 lived with his father Henry Taylor b.1873 and mother Sarah –not researched yet..There were 5 other siblings and address was 40 Brunlees,Hollinwood,Oldham.

It is probable that I assumed they were May’s parents because I distinctly remember aged about 9 years old, visiting their grave at Lees.Cemetery in the early 60’s with May,possibly on a Mothers’ Day remembrance mission .
Buried in the same grave also are:
JOHN EDWARD OGDEN 1872-1910 (38 yrs.) -Mona’s father
JANET OGDEN (1874-1947 (73 yrs.)-Mona’s mother.
I Always assumed these were May’s maternal grandparents i.e. Mona’s parents .

Janet Ogden’s maiden name was BROADBENT.Janet and John Edward married in 1896. and they had two known offspring i.e.MONA born 24/12/1902 and WILLIE b.1907.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now ,May Taylor’s actual parents were found to be JOHN WILLIAM TAYLOR b.1881 at Whitworth,Rochdale and CHARLOTTE ANN TAYLOR nee TOFT b.1882.
They married in 1905 and had three known offspring:
NELLIE TAYLOR b.14/8/1905
DOUGLAS TAYLOR b. 2/8/1915
And MAY TAYLOR b.24/3/1921. –the subject of my enquiry..
Their mother,Charlotte died in 6/1921 aged 39 about 3 months after May’s birth ,possibly as a result of that childbirth.
Later developments.

It is quite possible that Mona Ogden, as she then was, cared for and brought up May with the support of the Ogdens, her parents, from then onwards as she,Mona would be a young childless but unmarried woman of 19 at that time….That may be the reason why there is that ‘maternal’ connection between May and Mona. I feel that that connection between May and Mona must have been strong for May to take flowers to Mona’s grave.,like a real daughter would do for her mother.

NELLIE TAYLOR b.14/8/1905 - married Harry SCHOFIELD in 1926.She died on 16/7/83 aged 77 latterly living in Barton Road,Swinton,Gtr.Manchester.Any descendants not yet researched, but of course they would be May’s nephews or nieces.
In 1939 Nellie was recorded living with her husband Harold at 261 Boarshaw Road,Middleton. No children.

DOUGLAS TAYLOR b.2/8/1915.
By 1939 Douglas was working for a Middleton Drink Bottling concern and was living at 89 Green Lane,Boarshaw,Middleton.

The information about Nellie and Douglas ties in with the snippets I gleaned all those years ago, namely, that she had a sister, and certainly a brother called Douglas, and also joked that she was a Middleton Moonraker’,the local name for a person born there,as indeed so was I. It was nice to know we had something in common. Once ,during the school holidays May and I were on a bus trip at my grandma’s in Oldham.Passing through Middleton and the end of Hilton Fold Lane which leads into Boarshaw, she actually mentioned that she had a connection with that area.. I have an excellent memory thankfully and remember details such as that going back 60 years or so.
Douglas married Margaret BROADBENT b.9/10/17. In 1937.They had two sons born 1941 and 1947,believed to still be living in that area. One of them may have married in 1964 and the other in 1969. They would of course be May’s nephews.
Douglas died in 10/87 aged 72 years ,whilst Margaret died in 2001 aged 83 years ,in Kettering,Northants?

Researchers on Genes Reunited researchers told me that in 1939 May ,aged 18,and her widowed father were living in Middleton.May’s occupation was stated as Unpaid Domestic Worker.Later on she worked at the Avro factory in Chadderton, probably recruited for the war effort.,

May was taken in by my widowed maternal grandmother Ivy Shaw, nee Winterbottom,(1900-1992) of Middleton Road,Westwood Oldham, when I think they both worked together at Avro’s,Chadderton. This was probably in 1953 after May’s ‘mother’ Mona had died and May perhaps was living back in Lees looking after her mother.I say ‘mother’ in inverted commas because I now think she looked upon Mona and Edward Taylor as if they were real parents, maybe because there was a Taylor family connection perhaps, although it could be just coincidental as Taylor is a fairly common name.

Prior to that my own maternal grandmother Ivy had lived in Wellyhole Street,Lees so I’m not sure if my grandmother knew the Ogden’s/Taylor’s of Lees previous to that.
May became a good companion to my longtime widowed when young grandmother but was more like a daughter or a sister to her,and of course a much loved ‘aunty’ to us.
.
For whatever reasons, sadly there was to be no further contact between May and her family since that time in the mid 1950’s….

Two GR members have in their trees a Douglas Taylor born 1915 in Oldham.

BUT......................there were two births in Oldham for the name in 1915, so their entries may be the other birth.

The only way to try to find out is to send a contact message.

No-one is likely to contact you, I'm afraid.............

David

David Report 21 Sep 2020 17:26

Thank You for that.
I feel sure that you have verified Douglas Taylor born 1939.The address of Green Lane ,.Middleton was the giveaway as during the 1960's May pointed out to me whilst we were on a bus, the end of a road which leads to that road saying something like that's where she used to live or had a connection with that area.Dougie was certainly alive then as she would have mentioned it otherwise.
May never had any contact with Douglas or any member of her family until her death in 1998.
As I said in my initial post she was a much loved 'Auntie in our family and perhaps the only one who knew Mays backstory would have been my grandma Ivy Shaw, the workmate of May who gave her a home and took her in.becoming companions to her and part of our wider family until her death. So she did find some happiness.
None of Mays relatives came to the cremation but then they would probably not have known of her passing. As I said there was never any known contact from anybody in her family.

Going back to your opening query - looking for May's living relatives.

Her brother Douglas was born 1915, as already posted.
When May spoke about her brother, did you get the impression that he was alive at that time - 1960s?

This looks as if it should be him in 1939, with his wife:

Douglas Taylor
in the 1939 England and Wales Register

They had two sons, born in Middleton, in 1941 and 1947.
I'm not posting the details are they may well still be alive, but you can easily find them on FreeBMD.
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Just enter both parents' surnames in a birth search.

Unfortunately, both sons have such common names with no helpful middle initials, that it's hard, if not impossible, to trace them in later life, on Electoral Rolls, for instance..

The older son may perhaps have married in Middleton in 1964.
His wife's surname isn't an unusual one, so it's hard to know if any of the many Lancashire births after 1964 are their children or not.

The younger son may have married in Middleton in 1969.
His wife's surname is more unusual.
If so, there are three possible births of children, in Oldham, 1971, 1983, and 1985.
But also others in other places in Lancashire and elsewhere.

I can't see definite later records of any of the Oldham children, as the names aren't unusual enough.

Thanks to All for your research and thoughts.
May 'sDOB definitely 24th March 1921.

May left the New Earth St.address in Lees probably after the death of her 'mother'' Mona in 1953 -the timeline is correct as she was given a home by my maternal grandma about that time when they both worked at Avros in Chadderton during that decade.
Interesting to know Charlotte was her real mum.
I can well believe she treated Edward and Mona as her real parents hence the visit tIo Lee's Cemetery with me in tow about 1960 to lay flowers and clean up the grave.I have a very strong memory of doing that aged 10 or so in 1960.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 20 Sep 2020 21:51

If her DOB was definitely 24/3 /21, then she was the daughter of John William Taylor and Charlotte Ann Toft.

You said she was estranged from the Taylors.
Maybe that means her birth family - and not Edward and Mona ??

Maybe Edward and Mona had been like "parents" to her??
Her birth mother had died when May was born, by the look of it. (Or soon after).

David

David Report 20 Sep 2020 21:34

HI Yes I was wrong my AuntyMay Taylor's birth date WAS 24th March 1921 and not the 23rd.
Yes I attended her cremation at Hollinwood Crem in April 1998.
Yes I DEFINITELYvisited Lees Cemetery with May about 1960 to put flowers on her mother's grave.
Cemetery records show both Edward and Mona 's grave as 2C94 and also buried there are a John Edward Ogden 1872-1910 and Janet Ogden1884-1947 so they are Mona Taylor's Nee Ogden mum and dad.
Where did I get the TOFT connection?.I must be wrong.
'Re Middleton is correct as I remember May and myself joking about the fact that we were both Middleton Moonrakers-the local name for anyone born there,as I was.So that info is correct.
I do certainly remember she had mentioned to me when I was a precocious kid of 10 doing his first family tree, that she had a brother called Dougie who I feel reasonably sure had the surname Taylor, like her.
