http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/suggestions/thread/1283730?d=desc Jeremy :-)

cough cough is my only real problem :-)

I am in the UK, too; at one time it had been thought that the co.uk. was experiencing more issues than the za, au, nz :-)

Why do you say that Rex? There doesn't seem to be much wrong at the moment certainly nothing that warrants that comment.

Joy

I think I can offer an explanation of why you have difficulty with logging on

I have just looked at the URL in My Favourites and it contains a "Remember" Key and member number (Right Click, Properties)

If you enter through a Goodle Search then I doubt the member information would be passed to Genes in order to identify you, unless your computer was using cached information

Jeremy, I typed "About 75% of the time there is the error message when clicking on the site" - when it happens, I click on back or the GR logo and then am in the site instantly; the error is not experienced the other 25% of the time.

However, I really think that I would be remembered by this site whether or not I access it through http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/ from google or from favourites - I am certainly remembered by other sites such as, for instance, if one puts family tree forum in google http://www.familytreeforum.com/ I can enter that through google or through favourites, and I am remembered: at the top is "Welcome, Joy ******".

I am notifying support when errors occur; in fact they can be seen in their log when they occur, blips in the system.

Yes Joy, It takes me to the Find Ancestors Page........! Is that not correct? and, forget the 26th December as it is the busiest day for the internet in the entire year. The fact that you can use it at all is a miracle.

I have been doing some checks over the past two weeks and have come to the conclusion that GR will require you to log in if any of the following conditions are true:-

1. You have cleared your browser and deleted saved passwords.

or

2. You have your browser set not to save passwords.

or

3. You have logged out of GR by clicking on Sign Out

or

4. The website has inadvertently logged you out

or

5. The save password box on GR is unticked.

Personally I experienced 4 a couple of times when the site was really playing up but for the past week I must say it hasn't put a foot wrong.

Also bear in mind that settings for each of the GR international sites work independently of each other as do the settings for each browser if you are running more than one.

There may be other condition which will cause you to log in but these are the ones I have found so far. Comparisons with other sites may not always be appropriate either as they may work differently.

As far as compatibility is concerned, I am currently writing this on my old XP pc which is more than 10 years old using Firefox 10.

I also have IE8 running at the same time and have no problem accessing and working with my tree so I am not sure where the problems are.

As I now have a newer windows 7 pc which has double the memory and a much faster processor the XP one is now used by my grandson and as a spare backup, but having cleared out everything that wasn't essential it still puts up a decent performance.

I have had to log in for about the last 10 days, whether I enter via Google or My Favourites.

I have not cleared my browser.

My browser is set to remember passwords.

I do not log out.

My Save Password box is ticked.

This leave me with the possibility that I have been logged out by Genes.

No problem.....I am sure Phil will sort it out once the holidays are over.

He has been very helpful in helping me sort out my rather large In/Send message boxes.

It's also slow, slow, slow, and has been all day (ie, Jan 2 into Jan 3)

To the previous poster:

It could be a small percentage of members affected by the issues, or a large percentage; only Phil, and other members of his team would know that as they see the logged errors. I am aware that we that post on the boards are a very small percentage of the millions of members.

I have no problem with any other site.

"I suggest that until you have checked all of the above that you desist from ranting on about this matter as it most definitely is not down to Genes RU. "
- I have never ranted. Genes reunited's errors are logged as they occur.

To Rollo

all that you suggest, has been suggested in the past

All have been tried, and checked and double-checked.

I, dumb person that I am, prefer IE6 ......... that IS still my privilege ........... however I use Mozilla Firefox, most up-to-date version, for GR

It would have been better if you had read through the thread to read what had been suggested, tried, and still not resulted in a solution for some of us.

Yes, like Joy and others, I appreciate that many (???) members are not having problems .............. but at least some of us still are.

We are all in different countries, all have different servers, use a range of browsers, and have a variety of security programmes. And we all have problems at all hours of the day or night.

There are one heck of a lot of members (millions, according to GR's tally) who do not post on these Community Boards, we have no idea how many of those are having problems

........... there are even a lot of members who do use the Boards, but have never looked on THIS one, but have posted elsewhere that they are having a range of problems.

As Joy says, only GR knows how many people are affected.

We are not ranting ............ but at least I know that I am not alone in having a variety of problems!

PLUS ................ you are using at least some, if not all, of the excuses that GR themselves use if one tries to contact Support

ie, browser at fault, server at fault, cache not emptied, are you using IE6 ... then you MUST upgrade, etc etc etc

I can understand that they need to make the site pay, and when I first started using the records two years ago they only offered the 1841-1901 census plus the BMDs and it was a lot cheaper than the other two main sites. I found you got what you paid for.
As far as I am aware you cannot search by first names only nor is there a
wild card facility....so how are you supposed to find someone whose name is transcribed so badly?
Prime example why records cannot be found

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/ancestors/thread/1289472

I then had to subscribe to another site so I could find them and have been able to submit transcription errors on FMP which has now corrected them on here.
I do not like providing people with a" free family tree" and prefer to just help people who are stuck. I do get carried away sometimes and give more than needed, but normally only what has been asked for
As for the reporting of posts..............give up

Rollo

Please don't talk down to us, or patronise us!

I complain about various practical suggestions to solve the log-in problem because .......................

surprise, surprise

....................

I have been intelligent enough to TRY those suggestions ........ and they have NOT worked for me.

They are also suggestions that have been made at various times over the last 8 years that I have been using GR and its parent company FriendsReunited ....... the latter having gone through a similar period of problems about 5 years ago.

.............. and they didn't work then

I think you will find that others have also tried those suggested solutions, and they have not worked for them.

I, and I am sure most others, are not dumb enough to believe that we have a dedicated link to GR, despite your assertion that "most people" do not know this

.............. just as we do not have a dedicated link to any of the other sites that we use

............... sites that somehow do not have the same problems as GR.

I go to sites that I have to sign in only if I have NOT been on there for 6 months or more. Otherwise, I stay logged in.

I go to sites that have never logged me out, no matter how long it has been since the last time I visited.

I am never logged out on sister site FriendsReunited, and sometimes don't visit on there for months!!

Please don't treat us as idiots.

I've been an end user of computers for far longer than most people ..... probably even including you! ............. and I know what I should be able to get as the end user.

To be honest, I used my first computer in 1963.

Software programmers and developers are at fault if I do not get the result required.

As regards GR in general .................... in my opinion, it was an excellent site for people to start building their trees, and contact possible relations, plus get help from other members after the Community Boards were developed.

The decision to add records, started by ITV around 2007/8 and continued at a fast pace by BrightSolid, is where the mistake has been made.

IMHO ................. GR should revert back to its original position ..... regarded as a site that has one of the best Tree building programmes (according to a review on the internet), and with one of the very best community help programmes.

It should not be trying to compete with such excellent record holding sites as ancestry or FMP, nor with the free sites such as freebmd or the new familysearch.
