So many Cromptons, It could possibly be either of these family's, do they appear on the earlier censuses for the same area.

The version of the baptism that Gael had using lancs bmd showing James as an engine tenter (usually means in a cotton mill)

Baptisms: 3 May 1868 St Michael, Great Lever, Lancashire, England
Mary Ann Crompton - Child of James Crompton & Ellen
Abode: Great Lever
Occupation: Engine Tenter
Baptised by: T. Loxham, Rector
Register: Baptisms 1851 - 1906, Page 43, Entry 343

so if your James was a carter this looks like possibly the wrong family

Joseph

Joseph Report 25 Jul 2010 17:24

I can not find a wedding record for James and Ellen, nor can I find them on the 1881 census, but as yet I can not see a death record either.

Joseph

Joseph Report 25 Jul 2010 14:14

Is there a wedding record for James Crompton to either Ellen or his other wife that might help find his parents. or perhaps a baptism record.

Thanks Joe

Joseph Report 25 Jul 2010 11:42

When I first met my wife, who's family still lived in Bolton at the time. that was the same story, "we are descendants of Samuel Crompton you know". They said that one of Samuel's children or Grandchildren married below their status and was cut off. who knows, it is possible we are related. Thanks Joe

Christina(Lancashire) Report 25 Jul 2010 11:33

So no more clues from her marriage cert. then.

LOL. My grandfather was also a James Crompton from the Bolton area and he always claimed he was a descendant of Samuel Crompton......but then there are hundreds of Cromptons in that area.

Hi Ozi
Thanks again, This is the right area again, so did james marry again, is Ellen his second wife?. On the marriage cert it states that James Crompton was a Carter, perhaps he took this job at an older age when cotton spinning became to hard? Thanks Joe

Joseph

Joseph Report 25 Jul 2010 10:49

Hi Christina, she was a domestic servant in Newport street, Great Bolton on the marriage cert, the witnesses were, Martin Delaney & Mary Ellen Quinlan. It also states on the cert that James Crompton (farther) was a Carter, Timothy Quinlan (James Quinlan's farther) was a tailor. James Quinlan was a grocers assistant
Thanks Joe

Gael, That sound very possible. Great Lever is very close to Bolton & Farnwoth. I wonder if they are on the 1871 census.

Thank you Dea. That's the family, I did not know anything about the youngest child James, perhaps he died at a young age. I Its a shame Mary's parents were not living with them. Oh well.

Thanks again Joe
