no,I don't have alicias' death cert...where would i write to for a copy please? :-)

just checked my Aughney folder...I HAVE a copy of Alicias' death cert, but ther no mention of her maiden name...she just down as Alicia Aughney.,d 26th May 1907..f..married..age last birthday 80...wife of a farmer...cause of death ,general debility for 3 weeks...informant Catherine Aughney,daughter-in-law.,present at death.,Newtown.

Mo Chara Elaine...

You havent been around for a while..!!

If you get Alicia's Death Cert it surely will give you her maiden name..thought you already had it..

Alicia Aughney

got more certs...The Michael Aughney b.1914,was the son of John Aughney(the brother of my late mother-in-law,Margaret Mary)and Mary Anne Aughney(nee Larkin)..at the time they lived in Kildrenagh.,Bagenalstown.,Carlow.

this Michael married Kathleen(Catherine?)Curran on 20th April 1949.in Muinbeag(?).,Bagenalstown.

Michaels' address at the time was Boherduff, and Kathleens' address was Shangarry(?)Myshall.

also have a birth cert. for Catherine Aughney.,b 1897...father Michael Aughney..mother Catherine(nee Byrne)..living in Newtown.

I have this Catherine down as b 1898(but dates can vary i understand)..she was my husbands' a.Katie, and she married Michael McEvoy and had a daughter,Marion(Molly)..they went to live in Connecticut.,U.S.My husband got clothes parcels sent to Ireland from her(this was in the late 1940s)

I would love to go even further back in the family, but don't really know how to now....have got Cathrines' grandfather and grandmother(John Aughney...blind.,and Alicia Aughney) living with her,her parents and siblings at house 2.,Newtown in 1901 census, but cant find out Alicias' maiden name, nor anything about the blind John.

I would appreciate someone taking a quick look,to see if you could help.

thankyou.x

Elaine Report 5 Nov 2011 19:33

just received some more certs, and was upset to find that Leos' gt g/dad died at the age of 80,in the Workhouse.,Carlow.

what an awful way to go.

Elaine

Elaine Report 4 Nov 2011 23:19

i received the above details from my friend in Dublin..am awaiting the certs.

i have a theory(right or wrong?its no wonder its difficult to trace the family, when we have a John Curran(father Michael) m. to Margaret Mary Aughney.

now we've got a Michael Aughney(father John) m.to Kathleen(Catherine?)Curran!!!

between the Michaels.,the Johns.,the Catherines.,the Charles.,etc...it is very confusing!!

the Catherine b.1897 was Leos' Aunty Katie...she married Michael McEvoy, had a daughter,Marion(Molly)and they lived in Connecticut.US.

the Michael b.1914,seems to be the Michael Aughney(d.oct.1970,aged 56)... on the headstone in Newtown graveyard, along with Catherine Curran.d.1967.,aged 83yrs and Eileen Aughney,d.mar.1989.,aged 78 yrs.

could Michael have been illigitimate?

that would explain why there wasn't a husband buried with her..Michael her son(?)and Eileen his wife?

my sister-in-law seemed to get facts mixed up a bit,but the right names,if you know what i mean?

she told me that Jackie(John?) Aughney m. Bridget Byrne and her sister Katie(Catherine Byrne) m.Mick Thomson!

she also thought that John Aughney m.either Mary-Ann McEvoy

OR Mary-Ann Larkin!!

haha..found a grave in Newtown graveyard...MICK AUGHNEY(Lumclone.,Fenagh)late of the bog.,Newtown.,d.Mar.1993.aged 52 yrs....also his mother BRIGID AUGHNEY,d.Mar.2001,aged 82....also his father,JACK AUGHNEY,d.may,2002,aged 91 yrs.
)!

i don't know...a peter curran who( we understand )shares some past relatives with us,went to the graveyard in Newtown, and took pics of Curran and Aughney graves....we were in the same graveyard in Aug.,cos when we down there,we always take flowers to leos' mum and dads' grave, but we never thought of rambling round seeking family names!

the inscription on the headstone is as i put in the post yesterday at 14:07.

also at the bottom...PJ ABBEY(the stonemason?)and MYSHALL.

the writing is the same for all three people,so it looks like they were all written at the same time,or,the same man added the names in 1967.,1970 and 1989.

the only reason i took any notice was because we lost mi dad in Jan.,and when his name was put on the headstone,it differed from the writing of mi mums.

when we asked,we were told that in 1987,the letters were cut by hand, but now they are machine cut.

if i could find out the tel.no. for PJ Abbey and rang them, would they be at liberty to tell me who put up the headstone?

don't know bout the cost issue, but there's enough room for at least 2,if not 3 names and details.

same with the newspaper...would they keep their own archives, and would they be able to tell me?

don't suppose it would do any good to write to the Nationalist, and ask if anyone knows who erected the headstone in Newtown?

there may be probable relatives who have lost touch with the family.

Eringobragh1916 Report 4 Nov 2011 18:29

Elaine...The Nat./ and Carlow People only have limited (recent) online archives...You have to bear in mind all this online stuff only came to the fore in the last say..8-10 years....even more recent in some cases...

You would have to find out when and who put up the headstone to answer the question about other possible burials and why their names (if any) were not on the stone....
Often it was a case of cost ...also of space ....
I would be after looking at Eileens first as she was last buried (that you know of)...How old is the photo..?

Elaine

Elaine Report 4 Nov 2011 17:09

Are the Nationalist/.Carlow People archives online?

where are St.Andrews and St.Patricks?...round Leighlinbridge?

but if Currans were already buried there, would they not put their names on when the headstone was erected?

i looked at Irishmen killed in WW1,and living in the proximity of Carlow...found 3>>Pte.Edward Curran.,no.3748.,b.Abbeyleix.

Pte.Michael Curran.,no.6619.,b.Waterford.

Pte.Patrick Francis Curran.,no.T(territorial?)307818.,place of birth not given.

could maybe one of these have married Catherine?

i seem to be chasing mi tail at the minute!

Eringobragh1916 Report 4 Nov 2011 10:15

Elaine.....Given Cath.was buried first (1967) that would indicate it was a "Curran Grave"...could be other Currans were buried there earlier but no "Headstone" was in place...
You may find the info.your after by checking out the obits.for all of them...
The Nationalist /Carlow People archives may have them ...The Nationalist only comes out on a Wed.if my memory serves me well.
You can also try St Andrews or St Pats.both cover Newtown....St Andrews "Archives" (on line) only go back to early 2000.

Elaine Report 4 Nov 2011 07:42

oops....never thought of the name change with marriage!

i thought maybe she hadnt married....one or two of the women in the family didnt marry.

if Curran was her married name, why isn't her husband buried with her?

if he had been killed in irish uprising in 1916(i think)or WW1,wouldnt his name still be on headstone, even tho there no body buried there?I've seen on graves where it says ILM of someone, maybe in America.

will look on Anc. to see were there any Currans killed in WW!.

worth a shot.

I wondered about that Katie too

that is her birth name of course

name: Catherine Curran
registration district: Carlow
event type: BIRTHS
registration quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1884
volume number: 3
page number: 351
digital folder number: 4193461

there's a Katie Curran marriage in 1921 in Carlow
and a Catherine Curran marriage in 1928 in Carlow

so neither one would have died as Curran
