Clive Report 22 Dec 2014 20:10

Hi Tessa,
Many thanks for your information. I've not been on for a while as you can see.
Its lovely to find a member of my dads family as we know so little about them. Do you know if my gran was in contact with her sister? Dad and his sister Marj never met her family but knew odd snippets like Rose cottage and charles Edward was a gamekeeper- thats all I had to work on.
If you have any info on the family, like Edith Anne and Alices' mothers name or Charles' family Iwould love to know. Dad said he thought Gammy was a nurse in ww1 and thats how she met Grandad.
Hope to hear from you soon
Fiona

she will get an email notification of that if her email address at this site is current, but no notices are sent of replies in threads like this

hope you get in touch

Lewis (1848) says:
HOTHFIELD (St. Mary), a parish, in the union of West Ashford, hundred of Chart and Longbridge, lathe of Shepway, E. division of Kent, 16 miles (E. S. E.) from Maidstone
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445
[It's 4 km W of Ashford, 1km S of the A20, & 2km S of the London-Folkestone M20.

Births Sep 1888 (>99%)
BROWN Edith Annie V W. Ashford 2a 745

Births Jun 1890 (>99%)
Brown Alice W. Ashford 2a 755
Brown Arthur Norman W. Ashford 2a 755
Brown Joseph Matthew W. Ashford 2a 756

There's no infant deaths showing up for the boys - of course, Brown's not so uncommon a name that we can discount that they're not triplets.

I sent a brief message earlier. hopefully the info below sheds a better light on things.

My information is for the Grandaughter of Edith Anne Brown born 1888 My Grandma was Alice Burdon (nee) Brown Born 1890 died in 1959. They had three bothers Fred George Brown Born 1887. Charles Edward Brown Born 1895 & Calverley Richard Brown born 1897. Both Charles & Calverly died in action in the WW1. They had another sister called Elizabeth Maria Born 1893 and apparently died the next year in 1894.
Alice had two daughters: my mum Beatrice Alice & my aunt Edith Annie who was married to a Jim Armstrong. (I think you were getting confused with linking the name Armstrong with your Grandma) Incidentally I found Edith Anne Brown's name whilst my son & I were looking up Cookey House & Hothfield Place!

Alice Burdon(nee) Brown lived in Rose Cottage Burtersett Hawes Nth Yorkshire.
The cottage Charles Brown her father had bought when he retired as a gamekeeper. Alice's husband had died when my mother was two & her sister my aunt Edith about four. So the story goes she & the girls moved to Yorkshire for a better quality of life & for Alice to keep Home for her father. ( I do have a photo of Edith in a military jacket.) Hope to hear from you Fiona, regards Tessa.
