Thank you ArgyllGran.

Part of the article

Sergeant Harris visited the defendant's house and found the room occupied by his children in a most filthy state. There was no furniture save for the four posts of a bed, thick with dirt, a basin and a spoon: on the bedstead were a few dirty pieces of rag in which the defendants three children had endeavoured to envelope for warmth: without this they were in a state of nudity and suffering from infectious disease. They were all huddled together------------it gets worse!

Father Isaac was tolerably well clothed when he appeared in court.

I will check that one out Austin.

I have found and read the other newspaper articles you mentioned, so thank you for pointing them out to me.

The "Shocking Destitution" article regarding father Isaac, is indeed, absolutely shocking.

Hi Austin

I was thinking that the children were probably in the poorhouse, but I certainly wasn't expecting that!

How terribly sad.

No wonder poor young Isaac had to resort to begging and theft.

I have tried looking for the children by just using their initials but not had any luck.

AustinQ Report 29 Jun 2016 07:53

There's an article in the Hampshire Advertiser - Saturday 15 January 1859 of a Isaac Bull charged with neglecting his three children. The children were sent to the poor house.

Shocking Destitution:
A most shocking case of destitution in a family brought on by the drunken conduct of the father came under the notice of the borough magistrates...The defendant was Isaac Bull a coal runner living in the Ditches...
-----------------------------------------------------------

There are also several articles relating to Isaac Bull (which I think relate to Isaac Bull's son) from 1858- 1861 regarding offences of begging, theft etc.

So I suspect the children were in the poorhouse or prison in 1861.

Hi Chis Ho and ArgyllGran

Thank you both for posting.

Chris Ho, in the 1851 census, the family were in the civil parish of St Mary's, Southampton. I know that "Back Of The Walls Southampton" was, and still is, in St Mary's.

So I do believe the death you posted for Sarah in 1857 Southampton is spot on!

Brilliant.

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jun 2016 21:08
