Tigsmum Report 29 Jun 2016 11:27

Alice Louisa Burgess was my father's older sister born in Wisbech Workhouse on 27/01/1906.
She is in the 1911 census for the workhouse as Annie Louisa and I then have a record that she and the rest of the family - mother Elizabeth, my father William Edward (birth registered as Archibald William) and Lily May(fathers unknown) were re-admitted to the workhouse on 02/04/1914. I can find no record of her after that date.
Their mother Elizabeth married a fellow inmate Joseph Flowers (who may have been Lily's father) in 1915 and died in 1918. Flowers subsequently remarried in 1922. I believe that at some point my father was placed in some kind of boys home or orphanage so the same may have happened to Alice.
I apologise if this is rather confused but would greatly appreciate any suggestions as to how I can further my search.

I see according to the 1915 marriage, her mother was Elizabeth M Burgess.

If she was re-admitted to the workhouse in 1914, this won't be relevant then....

Chris Ho, that is definitely Alice's mother and I do have that info thank you although I hadn't come across the freereg site so thanks for that. The only knowledge I have of the Wisbech Workhouse admissions is that researched for me by Cambridgeshire Archives and frustratingly their records are patchy.

PricklyHolly
That's even more frustrating !! The details fit exactly but Alice is definitely registered as being re-admitted to the workhouse in 1914. I don't suppose she could have returned in the interim ??

You are obviously both far more experienced in research than I am . Thank you, I shall no doubt be back for more advice

Is it 100% certain that Alice/Annie was readmitted in 1914?

and I can't see a birth for a Lily May?

Potty

Potty Report 29 Jun 2016 12:59

If you go to the source of the record PH posted, it looks as if Alice was travelling with Archibald William (1) and Elizabeth Mary (28); unlike other entries, no ships name is given.

Click on

Card index to nominated immigrants 1908 to 1922

Then click on Nominated immigrants 1908 to 1922

And then Visualisation Preview, to bring up the database; put Burgess in the search box.

I wonder did the whole family go to Australia and then return?

Possibly they just enquired about emigrating - this from the above site:

Cards also exist for persons who made inquiries about immigration to Queensland, rejected applicants, applicants who returned to their country of origin etc. In many cases one member of the family came out alone, then nominated the remaining family members who followed later.

You can purchase the cards for A£6.00

I think you're all wonderful !!
Rambling Rose, I had been trying, on and off, for years to find any trace of Lily May without any success until Cambs Archives found her in the 1914 admissions, born in Spalding. I eventually found her as Lily May Flowers, Elizabeth having given her name as Flowers, previously Burgess, although they were not married until 2 years later.

Potty, I'm absolutely amazed at what you've found ! How do I purchase the other cards you speak of ?
I'm sure you will realise that I am a novice researcher

Well, I only followed on from PH's post about Alice Louisa. This is probably a better link to the website:

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/Indexes/Immigration/Pages/NominatedImmigrants1908.aspx

It has info on what the cards are and what info they contain and also how to order a card. You would only need to buy one as there is only one card per family.

Given that your Burgesses don't have a ship recorded, I would think that they either just enquired about immigration or were rejected.

Rambling Rose

I didn't know of the existence of Rachel Flowers !! I haven't searched for any connections on that side so far, as I know my father hated him.
It's all beginning to fill in the picture, Thank you

Yes Elizabeth died in 1918 and Flowers subsequently re-married in 1922.
I'm sorry if I've not given you all the info I have but initially my post was to try to find more about Alice.
This is now very exciting because it occurs to me that the person who nominated them in Queensland could actually be the childrens' ( Alice and William/Archibald) father ! The only thing I ever knew about him was that my Dad said he"went down with Kitchener" i.e. HMS Hampshire so if I can find a connection between the nominator and HMS Hampshire (I know of that website) there's just an outside chance he might be my grandfather"" :-D

I don't understand your reference to the HMS Hampshire website, which certainly has a connection with my Dad but to the best of my knowledge Flowers was his stepfather.
