Potty

Thanks for sending the signatures, have enlarged and although not dissimilar am not convinced. Suppose are signatures can change but certain characteristics normally remain.

Think I am just going to have to claim him as mine ;-)

Thanks for that Chris.

You are both stars.

Yes Chris the Ref. you gave is for James Alexander Bains, my great Uncle.

Where would I look to see South Shields Gazette?

Hi Carol

have sent you the image of James/Eliza's marriage. The Master's certs records show him applying for his Second Mate's cert. First Mate's and Master's (Captain's) certs and applying for a duplicate. It seems that the each cert had to be returned when applying for the next one.

Carol 430181 Report 21 Mar 2014 11:11

Sorry only just come on line.

Wow!
Potty, that is fasinating re application for duplicate certificate does prove he did visit London, but by 1887 g.grandmother had remarried.

Yes that is a mistake Eliza must have given husband's occupation.

Would love to see the ships he served on, where would I find these?

Chris, thanks for that, any snipped of information if helpful, did not realise he was a Capt.

Just need to see my great grandfathers signature then it will prove one way or another that the James from South Shields was a bigamist.

Carol

Carol, I will PM you one of the Application Forms for Master's cert that was filled in by and signed by James A Bains - do you have the marriage cert to compare the signature?

Looking for his Master's certs on Ancestry, I have come across another set of records and these are very interesting. He seems to have applied for a duplicate Master's Cert in 1887 because he had lost a portmanteau containing the original between Kings Cross Station in London and Newcastle - so that puts him in London at about the right time.

If you have access to Ancestry, do a search for James Alexander Bains b1842 South Shields and scroll down passed the family tree records. There are a few results but you need to page through all the images.

I notice that Eliza is shown as Ship Steward on the census - perhaps she and James met aboard ship? On one of the documents in the Master's certs record there is list of the ships he had served on from 1865 to 1883. I wonder if crew lists for those are available. Will have a look.

Patty,

I have seen 2 copies of the Masters Certs. on a Tree on Ancestry but don't know how to find them.

Found the birth of a Leanora Bains b.1883 so would appear he was still alive then Roy.

Can anybody else please look at them?

Potty Report 19 Mar 2014 14:27

I can't find the James b1856 on any census and he would only have been 19 in 1875, yet on the marriage is shown as full age and a widower. There is this death in 1878 but the age of death is missing from the image:

Carol 430181 Report 19 Mar 2014 14:09

Right so it looks like this.

James Alexander Bains b. 1842 South Shields father Alexander Bains mother Mary Ann. Married Jane Elizabeth Nicholson in Newcastle 1867.

They had 3 children, Ethel b.1870 James Alexander b.1871 and Annie b.1873.
Ethel died in 1990 and they emigrated in 1891 to Canada.

The records are there for James birth, marriage, on 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891

All I have for my James Alexander Bains is a marriage cert. If I could find him on just one census then I would know it was not the James above. So need to find out more for James b.1857 that Porkie Pie suggested.

Unfortunately I have no relatives left who I can ask, only the story my mother relayed, but being young did not ask questions.

She always told me he was quite old when he married, he was Spanish, could speak several languages, and that he died and did not see her dad.

Always remember when I was about 6 my first encounter with family history when my parents took me to Somerset House, can still remember to this day when they were looking through those big books. The week before this happened, late one night my Aunt Alice who was Jame's daughter knocking on our door, lots of shouting and she said "how dare you say we are a load of little b--tards" obviously there must have been something odd going on, when I started doing family history, it was obvious mother was looking for the marriage cert.

Carol, James signed 4 of the Master's certs and the image on Ancestry is of the Parish Record of his marriage to Eliza Holland, so he would have signed that. I am pretty sure the signatures are for the same man.

Potty,

Yes have seen the Certs. not sure what you mean, James does not sign them.

The Canadian census is for the James Bains b.South Shields 1842 who emigrated 1891.

That is the correct details for my great grandparents marriage.
