Im so sorry I hadnt replied - I hadnt realised there were more threads!!!!! Ive now had the DNA testing done through Ancestry, a year ago, and I have the teeniest bit of Scandinavian blood, the rest is British and EASTERN EUROPEAN. Just under 50% Eastern European. So I know Im on the right tracks. I have a few East Europe and Scandinavia matches but I dont recognise the surnames from their tree (Ive contacted them and had replies) and we cant work out a match.
I know Krilous is often on the marriages, births etc but on the actual certs its always Krilovs.
His first and middle name's were Valdis Valdeman, from his marriage and death certs. Its stated 'also known as' and then Waldis Waldeman. The W was the Swedish variation, no doubt from the controlling Swedish stepfather whose surname my grandad had too, until he got rid of it over in England and went back to Krilovs. He intended a different spelling (Crylovs) so people could pronounce it, but the admin made a mistake. On coming to England and getting naturalised, my grandad called himself Walter.
The age thing is interesting. Marriage and death certs give two years of birth...one is 1926 and the other is 1928. In photos he does look older than he supposedly was, I'd say a good 10 yrs older, but I suppose some people do. He passed away in 1981 from liver problems and severe bronchitis. I wasnt sure if he'd lie about his age on an official document though? Although with his bride being a lot younger maybe he did indeed knock a few years off.
Ive since been told that the navy may have paid for his place at boarding school after his fathers death, BUT also, boarding schools were used as children's homes. His step father obviously didnt want him around so that's a possibility. If the cruelty was very bad, he may have been taken into care there. But he said it was a Stockholm school. Somebody has looked on the schools version of Friends Reunited and nothing resembles him, nobody remembers him. I forgot to mention the stepfathers surname was Swensson/Svensson. Nobody knew the first name, or they're not telling.
