The name Maddison is intriguing

A very interesting theory.
However according to all census George was born in 1858 but then again he could have been mistaken.
I had searched most of the areas around Pittington and could not find anything.

Considering that George was going by the wrong name as my mother was told that observation of yours might be worth checking.

Yes I have checked and it would appear to be two different people as George maddison lowery is mentioned later on as father of the bride.
And he also lives in the next village to George Parry at the same time

You do have to be aware that the age on a census (and hence the birth year) is commonly 1 year out from the real birth year, and often as much as 2 years.



The census enumerator asked for a person's age on the night of the census

Then the modern-day transcriber changed that to birth year.


Now, depending on when a person's birth date actually was, the birth year can be out that 1 year ............. and as I said, 2 years is not uncommon.




Plus ...................... ages for everyone over the age of 15 on the 1841 Census were rated down to the nearest 5 ............... so birth years on there can be as much as 4 years out.

eg, someone saying they were 29 in 1841, would have their age shown as 25 ..............

and the modern-day transcriber will put that down as birth year 1816 .................. instead of the 1812 that it really should be.

Hi Sylvia and everyone who helped me,

I have found a baptism for a George Marwood in Pittington.

His father Vickers Marwood (blacksmith) and his mother, Elizabeth.

I have the birth cert for his brother, William Marwood too.

I also have the death certificate for my great great grandmother Elizabeth Marwood on the 25/5/1912 in Shotton, County Durham. The informant was her son George Marwood of 26 Lambton Street, Sherburn Hill which also happens to be the address of my great grandfather in the 1911 census

So everything comes together. Just thought it would be nice to let you know after all these years.
