Hi, I'd like to thank you for helping me.

I'm now pritty certain my Dorothy Hume was born Dora and that there has been a mistake on the birth cert either by the parents stating the wrong month or the registrar. I have searched for all Dora/Dorothy/Hume/Hulme and it points me right back to the one person. I have also searched the census and there is only one Dora with parents called Mary and Thomas. The parish records also confirm that only one Dora Hulme or Hume was christened and her d.o.b is Feb not Jan and her parents are also Mary and Thomas with the name variant Hulme.

Thanks for the info. The person helping me before managed to find Dora's christening record which also says the date of birth is February and she has the same parents. Which is another reason I think the date on the birth cert is wrong.

I doubt that registering a few days late would bother the registrar................BUT, all the MORE reason for January to be accurate, if you think it through

Jacqueline Report 11 May 2015 16:19

You can't presume anything about info given at death

The son only knew his mother's DOB because she told him........................it didn't have to be right.

My son takes my word for my DOB......................it happens to be accurate, but it could just as easily not be.

Thank you I have this record in my keep safe and will order the cert.

Marriages Mar 1893 (>99%)

Hall Mary Ann Gateshead 10a 1009
Hume Thomas Gateshead 10a 1009

Gidnoid

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 16:10

It says on the birth cert dora's mother was Mary Hume formerly Hall.

Gidnoid

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 16:09

The date on the death certificate was given by her son so I presume it is right.

My grandfather's mother is Dorothy Maughan formerly Hume but there are no records for a Dorothy being born in that area.

The Marriage cert says her father is Thomas Hume

The death certificate says her D.O.B is 25/02/1895

I ordered the birth cert for Dora Hume as she was born in the right area, quarter and year and her father is Thomas.

The birth was registered on 12th March 1895 which would have been about 4 days over. I also found out that if the birth was registered late the super intendance would have also signed the certificate.

The 6-week period for registering births still applies

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 11 May 2015 15:43

What was the name of Dora's mother?

Jacqueline

Jacqueline Report 11 May 2015 15:37

Copies of PR's will be at the County Records Office

Why assume the registrar was at fault............he would have written what he was told by the person registering the birth. On what date was the birth registered?

Actually, it's far more likely that the date on the death cert is wrong...........

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 14:31

I've just done another search and there are no other Dora Hume or Hulme's born that year in that area.

Gidnoid

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 14:18

Yes I think dora's sister Martha married her husbands brother. There are 15 Maughan's born to Hume's which must be a combination of there children which is why I'm not sure whom my grandfathers siblings are.

After you posted the parish record I am even more convinced I have the right person as her parents names are the same. I think the registrar must have had a bad day!

Would it be possible for a copy of the parish record?

I have emailed Holy Trinity Parish, Gateshead. To see if they can point me in the right direction of obtaining a copy of an original.

would that be George's brother?

Gidnoid

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 13:55

I've just ran a search on Dora Hulme births and there was 2 in 1895 but not in gateshead so the parish record you have must be correct.

There are quite a few Dora hume's so the marriage must be another, would you agree?

Two Dora's?

Gidnoid

Gidnoid Report 11 May 2015 13:48

Wow that's interesting! The surname on the death certificate is spelt this way and her mother is also called Mary. Would you say the registrar wrote Jan instead of Feb by accident in this case?

Also would it be possible for you to place that record in your keepsafe so I can save it please?
