"john Edward ransons that you found for me Erith cemetery have emailed me to say public grave with 4 others not relatives "

I'll have another look (later or tomorrow) comparing plot numbers to see if there were any others buried at roughly the same time. If Erith Cem say its a publc grave, then that could be the case. Alternatively, but unlikely given what they've said, it could have been 'rented' for a given number of years, then re-used.

"if this is so for my granddad grandmother and uncle im amazed "...... the example for OH's rellies given earlier? We were surprised they didn't have headstones. If their children had clubbed together, they could have afford it. Perhaps in both of our cases, the money could have been put to use to benefit the living!

Assuming Lily was buried close to her Chislehurst home, you could email the Cemeteries office based in Orpington

Cemeteries office,
High Elms Country Park,
Shire Lane,
Orpington, BR6 7JH
[email protected]

They do charge £44 per enquiry!

Public Graves -

John Edward Ranson buried in C853.
On the same page, Richard Baker aka Couchman was buried in the same plot on 10 Nov. On 14 Nov, so were Louise Laux and Albert John Newman.

William John Cyril Russell buried in E 454
That one looks as if it might be a common grave as well
On 23 May Winifred Roden was buried, Walter Smith was buried in it on 13 June & Frederick William Warren on 21 June.

Beatrice Ethel Russell buried in C719
Looks like the same for her. At least 2 burials in the same plot on 18 Feb & 22 Feb.
Florence Gertrude Howell on 18 Feb & one other on 22 Feb (image with name seems to be missing)

Lilian was Lily!! For once, Lily wasn't a diminutive of Lilian :-D
At least you've got a definative date of death and last known address which is a help. In case you missed it, that was on the probate entry.

In case you weren't aware, you can search for those at no charge on https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
Bear in mind that not all Estates went to Probate, and those that were may be filed the year or more later. If you decide to use the site, check which year range tab is highlighted. There are 3

Wills and Probate 1996 to present
Wills and Probate 1858 – 1996
Soldier's Wills

Out of interest, how or where did you find Arthur's cremation, or was that from family papers? You might be able to teach us a trick or two.

You said you were planning to subscribe to Ancestry next week. Before you do, see if you can find a discount code as there are usually some about. You could start a new thread on this board asking if anyone knows of one.
Quite a few people say they purchase Family Tree Maker using their Tesco Points just so they can get discounted access.

If you wanted access to the Bexley records and baptism, marriage and burial ones for London, I suspect you’d need the Premier package rather than the Essentials. But do ask ‘the board’ as that could be wrong. Like many FH sites, they do offer a 14 day free trial. If you decide its not for you, remember to phone to cancel about 10 days from signing up.

Most libraries have access under a common license if that helps.

This is all I can find about G H Harris, which you presumably already have. No Probate to 1974.

Name: George Henry Harris

Date of Registration: Dec 1971
Age at Death: 76

Inferred County: Kent

Walter Alfred Ranson’s Estate went to Probate

Surname RANSON
First name WALTER ALFRED
Date of probate 30 January 1996
Probate number 9681302236
Date of death 20 December 1995
Document type Grant and will
Registry Ipswich

Harold Leonard Ranson isn’t listed on the Wandsworth Burial and Cremation site
http://burials.wandsworth.gov.uk/# so he either died or was buried 'out of area'
Nor did his estate appear to go to Probate.

Sorry – can’t find ‘Free’ records for any of them.

Off hand, do you know if any of the 'lost' people had children? If you aren't in contact with them, we may be able to find addresses. You could then write.
Are they listed on anyone else's trees on this site? If so, the tree owners may have additional information.
No one person is expert at finding all records. What one person can't find, another might. To a certain extent it's the way people 'think' and can manipulate search engines. Before last night I wasn't aware there was a database for Wandsworth burials. You can learn something every day.
I'll add a list of suggested sites you may find useful in a while.

Regarding Ancestry. If you're having second thoughts, sign up for the 14 day trial to see what you think. If you decide against it, use the free phone number to cancel about 10 days later. 0800 404 9723.
Even as a free/lapsed member you can still use the site to search for records. Quite often there are threads on here where people ask for details of the 'previews' they have found.

Some suggested (free) sites, some have already been mentioned or you may know about. If in doubt, ‘google’ the town or parish.

http://www.searchelectoralroll.co.uk/Electoral_Roll_Search.asp but check the post code to see if it’s current on http://www.192.com/?gkw=192+com (free search)

The majority of cremation or burial records in the last, say, 40 years are held by the respective councils who will charge to search for them. Obviously there are some exceptions.
Parish records for baptisms and marriages tend to have a closure such as 100 or 50 years – it does depend on the local policy. You may find that they haven’t been deposited with the county archives, or if they have, they aren’t on line.
