I'm still trying to define the Smith/Wickham link - can't seem to find a marriage between Charlotte and somebody surname Wickham.

OK so the 1871 census was done on 2 April, John George was born on 11 Dec. Charlotte is in London on the census, the birth of JG being registered in 1872 with John Scott as father. Clutching at straws now...
Charlotte goes to London not knowing she is pregnant, has baby which is then given to either Scott or Smith family. Charlotte (disgraced?) goes off and meets/marries Wickham. Death/divorce of Wickham and she returns to family and marries John in 1878. So I'm looking for a marriage between 1871-8.

Looking at the info greyghost supplied I also have a Caroline Mayo, shown as John's sister - but again a marriage to a Mayo is proving elusive.

That said if the John Smith/Charlotte Wickham marriage is proved I think I have been able to push back my tree by another two generations.

This is my wife's side of the tree but amazingly they seem to originate froma village next to the one my family moved to from London back in 1963 - and only 15 miles away from where I'm sitting :-)
