George "neglected to attend court". I wonder if they didn't know he'd died?

(did wonder that here also!)

(those two burials 1874 and 8 on below)

(1874 also on London Burials, Ancestry, Workhouse, under Occupation column, Nil)

Edits (see below, Ancestry, London, says Spinster!, her Father matches)

(Charles Willingale abt 1835 6 Apr 1859 Ann Waller Holy Trinity, Gray's Inn Road)

AustinQ Report 17 Dec 2016 13:03

The 1856 death is not correct- that was for a baby (age shown in GRO Indexes):

Name: Age at Death (in years):
BROAD, GEORGE 0
GRO Reference: 1856 M Quarter in MARYLEBONE Volume 01A Page 323

There's also this death:

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar

BROAD George 15 June Administration of the effects of George Broad late of 20 St Leonards Square Kentish Town in the County of Middlesex Bachelor who died 28 February 1874 at St Pancras Workhouse, Marylebone in the said county was granted at the Pricipal Registry to Sarah Turner of 220 Liverpool Road, Islington in the said County, Widow the Aunt and only next of kin.
-----------------------------------------------

I don't see George Broad at 20 St Leonard's Square in 1871- although there is a veterinary Surgeon living there:

Do you have Ann & Charles's marriage cert? does it say she was a widow?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Dec 2016 12:14

Interesting, BradM!

George "neglected to attend court". I wonder if they didn't know he'd died?

But it seems unlikely that the summons would have been served two years earlier.

Are you sure the 1856 death is the right George?

EDIT:

How about this one? His YOB would match with that given for George in 1851 census:

Deaths Mar 1874 (>99%)
BROAD George 55 Pancras 1b 93

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Dec 2016 12:10

She did eventually marry Charles, in the same quarter as the birth of son Charles:

Marriages Jun 1859 (>99%)
Waller Ann Holborn 1b 680
Willingate Charles Holborn 1b 680

BradM

BradM Report 17 Dec 2016 11:56

George Broad died in 1856, the article above is from 1858? So was the case from a few years earlier and just published late? Or did this happen after he died?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 17 Dec 2016 11:45

The 1858 newspaper report posted by Chris says Ann had been "living as his wife" - so presumably they weren't married.

Thank you so much for your help, I got some certificates and George Broad the Veterinary Surgeon is the correct one!

George married Anne Waller, but I can't find a marriage? :-)

31 July 1858 - Marylebone Mercury - London, London, England

MARYLEBONE.
Affiliation. Anne Weller attended in support of a summons which she had obtained against George Broad, a veterinary surgeon, living in Brown-street, Marylebone, in regard to four children to which, while living with defendant, for many years, as his wife, she had given birth. Defendant neglected to attend in obedience to the process of the court, and after Baldwin, the officer, had been examined as to his having served the summons upon him, and evidence being given by complainant and other witnesses, an order was made on defendant to pay 10s. per week, being 2s. 6d. for each of the four children.
