Hi Chris, sorry I missed all of these replies! :-S

I have ordered the naturalisation certificate for Charles Nilsson to see if this is the correct one! I sure hope it is, wouldn't know where to go from here if it is not.

I will let you know anyway.

Thank you all for your help.

(bearing in mind, that other Charles Nilsson/Sweden is about also!, and could even be others)

(some info. on it below)

About UK, Naturalisation Certificates and Declarations, 1870-1912

With citizenship came the right to vote, hold civil or military office, and the ability to inherit land, but for immigrants in England, until 1844, naturalisation was a costly process. Beginning in 1844, the process no longer required an act of parliament and naturalisations could be granted through the Secretary of State for the Home Office

This collection includes naturalisation certificates, declarations of British nationality, and re-admissions to British nationality, as well as related correspondence, for the years 1870–1912. (Series HO 334 includes records that date to 1949, but later records are restricted because of privacy requirements.)

Naturalisation certificates will typically list the name of the immigrant, residence, birthplace, age, parents’ names, occupation, and the names of any underage children.

(Notes on 1901, he states N.B.S. not on 1911 though!)

(You also have below to check on Ancestry, bearing in mind they are not complete, and the name changes are many!)

Kelsey ...............

buy one of the children's birth certificates.

Thta will give you the mother's maiden name .............. hopefully it is Fellows!

Then find the marriage that marches a Charles Nilsson marrying a woman with the maiden name ............ again, hopefully that is the marriage to Catherine Fellows.

Buy that marriage certificate.

It SHOULD have on it the name and occupation of Charles' father 9as well as Catherine's).

Thta now gives you a lead that you don't currently have .............. the name of Charles' father.

I don't know whether you know about buying English certificates??

Buy ONLY from GRO (General Register Office) .... it's the official centre AND the cheapest.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Click on Order Certificates Online.

You have to register but it is free.

Then follow instructions .......... give names ONLY as you have found on the Indexes.

Each certificate will cost you £9.25 including postage and handling, no matter where you are in the world.

Thanks Chris! I think that is Lilian Elizabeth Nilsson you've found there! 'Lily' has the same birth date as Lilian. I agree, to get any further with this I will definitely need to get some certificates but the one in REALLY want is Charles' which is proving difficult as I don't know his exact d.o.b and he was also born in Sweden so I have NO idea where to start

And could any one help with finding when Charles cane to the UK?

Sorry for a million questions, I'm really struggling with this one for some reason

Kala

Kala Report 27 Jan 2017 12:07

So in 1901 he had an adopted daughter? How do I go about finding more on her? I'm using Ancestry.com mainly if that helps. Also, who could the boarders be?

So Charles Nilsson was born in Malms, Sweden in 1958 is that correct?

Any more tips you have for me would be great, I appreciate you're help and if you're able to explain it in lay-mans terms that would be even better!

Thank you all!

I am still confused though, is the 1911 census from 118 Avondale Road not the correct one? It has the same named father and children, correct ages and correct number of children listed. Surely it has to be them?

I'm still new to this, please forgive my ignorance! :-)
