Yes Barbara's mother was Faith Harris, I have her birth cert.

patchem Report 28 Apr 2017 22:38

Sorry, surely Barbara emigrated with Edward Ho(l)mes, and you can see those links to the graves?

Is this Barbara's birth registration, with mother's maiden name as Harris?
ROBERTS, BARBARA JANE HARRIS
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in WEST ASHFORD Volume 05 Page 11

Barbara was born in April 1848 on 1900 South Dakota census

The lady who contacted me said he was, I took it at face value as shes related. Im totally out of the loop with research, having had a long time off, but Id rather know. So Barbara didnt emigrate after all then and the children arent hers. Thankyou for doing this for me, I'll go back to my tree x

Why did you think he was Robert Edward Holmes?

RStar

RStar Report 28 Apr 2017 21:50

Sorry - have been out all day. All I basically knew from certs is that Barbara's mother died just after childbirth and her father had died a few months previous. The births and deaths of the family were reg'd by a Naomi Roberts, Barbara's aunt. I couldn't find Barbara anywhere until a distant relation emailed to say she had emigrated to USA with a man named Mr Holmes, and married him. Of course its possible that this lady made a wrong turn in her research... Barbara was a Romany gypsy and her parents never legally married.
SO...... have I took a wrong turning do you think? And its just Edward Holmes not Robert Edward. Could Robert not just have been made by his middle name? Thankyou for reading x

So this marriage:
Marriages Jun 1869
Homes Edward E Ashford 2a 949
Roberts Barbara Jane E Ashford 2a 949

Edward Homes NOT Robert Edward Holmes

From the same bmd that malyon half-posted.

alviegal,

Think this is the marriage for that census:
Marriages Jun 1869
BROOKES Jane E. Ashford 2a 949
Cloke James E Ashford 2a 949

as there is this GRO birth:
CLOKE, THOMAS FREDERICK BROOKS
GRO Reference: 1869 D Quarter in EAST ASHFORD Volume 02A Page 664

There is this James that would fit. Maybe his wife preferred her middle name? It is just speculation though.

If she did marry in America (looking less likely), and that they were living in Wisconsin, have you tried looking for records here:

http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/

Has anyone found James Cloke after that marriage, with or without a Barbara, but probably need that marriage certificate to ensure correct people?

The Ingersoll family tree on Ancestry gives this as their first child:

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=30180809&ref=acom

and then keep on clicking for more information on others in the family.

1930 census gives immigration year as 1871 - but these dates are usually regarded as unreliable.

Added:
1900 census says immigration 1870.

She also claims to be Welsh in some censuses, whilst in others a parent is Welsh and she is English.

patchem

patchem Report 27 Apr 2017 21:05

She had 10 children, 6 still living for 1900 census in Spink South Dakota.

Barbara Holmes 52

Edna M Holmes 24
Albert E Holmes 22
James B Holmes 19
Arthur W Holmes 11
Walter R Holmes 8
Benjamin Holmes 6
