No, Ann, he wasn't. He was at Yeovil for a while and on HMS Eagle. (before my time!!!) When I first met him in 1962 he was on the Ark Royal, and was posted to Culdrose just before we were married in 1964. After that it was Portland for a couple of years and then he bought himself out. In those days Carriers were at sea for months at a time, home for leave, and then off again. and we just didn't want separate lives. Short sighted really as he wasn't in long enough for a pension, but we both feel it was the right thing to do. OH was able to work and train as an engineer as he had been involved with maintaining aircraft in the Navy, experience that certainly helped us to get on our feet. It was a bit tough for a year or two, but worth it.

Ooh my oH was on eagle I think 1963 the year she was recommissioned. He did a couple of months at Yeovil and another few months at Culdrose but was mainly at daedelus until he finished his 12 in 1968 and couldn't wait to get out. But as you say good grounding for a civvie job. He was lucky on Eagle as he was only away 6 months we were married then with a 3 year old. Those long drafts were awful, he had been in 1967 involved in redesigning something on Ark (I think) ..... He was REA(air) and was given a heads up that his next draft was on Ark so he didn't sign on. :-)

I started watching the first episode I'd recorded, couldn't understand/hear much of the dialogue at the Inn and thought, why bother, so I deleted that and the episode I recorded from last evening. I am sure it will be repeated at some point hopefully with clearer sound so I will wait for that or go without!

I have revisited it on iplayer and the sound was much better there. You can have subtitles if you need them.

It is true that many scenes are dark but I think the lighting level is not unrealistic.

I think the sound was better last night, I could hear it all clearly anyway.

Ann, My OH was the same, he couldn't wait to leave!! He went into the Navy aged 18 to do his National Service (that dates us!!) as he reckoned that he would get free travel to exotic places, which of course he did. After his time was up (two years I think for the Navy) he loved it and signed up for a further 9 years, which was fine till he and I met about a year later! and wanted to get married, then suddenly it WASN'T alright, and he moved heaven and earth to leave, which finally happened in 1967. I think, looking back, it must have worried my parents no end, although they didn't say anything, as by then we had a three year old, no home, no job, minimal prospects!!!! But we were young, optimistic, OH was hard working and would turn his hand to anything, had each other and everything worked out in the end.
Jamaica Inn was 'better' last night, except I went to sleep through some of it!!!. I can't say it's been the most riveting adaptation I've ever see, but maybe tonight I shall stay awake, and all will be revealed!!!

Does any one know which company made it?

ITV aired a couple of Ken Follett books and one of the Kate Mosse trilogies - the sound on those were dire. Although I've not having watched Jamaica Inn, could they same production company be involved?

We'll have to look into the possibility of a sound bar - it might solve the evening arguments ;-)

I see all the papers have picked up on the dreadful sound of this.
The Telegraph have it plastered all over the front page...and looking at Mail on line they have lists of celebs and actors who couldn't understand either.
Hope they learn some lessons. :-S

I agree about the sound and especially the chap (Joss?) who constantly mumbles so that I have to keep rewinding to try and decipher what he is saying..........but I have to say, I am really enjoying it.

I'm looking forward to tonights episode. ;-)

GinN Report 23 Apr 2014 19:27

I found the first episode a bit hard to get into, even without the poor sound, but enjoyed last night's much more, so I'm looking forward to tonight, too. It's certainly very atmospheric.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 23 Apr 2014 22:06

Well I enjoyed it tonight, although violent it didn't seem so gloomy. And the vicar was creepy. Can't remember who said that :-)

Apart from the scenes on the beach I enjoyed the series.
Thought Jessica Brown Findley was very good.

Reading in the authors description of making it, the sea was so rough when they filmed it, and cold, that each actor who went into the sea had their own individual lifeguard.

I have never read the book......

All in all..........I enjoyed it. :-)

Magpie, Ann, My dad was on The Eagle and on the Ark Royal in the 60's.
He was also a trainer(?) at HMS Raleigh.

I watched a bit last night, but wasn't impressed by the costumes - it was near Christmas Eve and they didn't appear to have enough clothes on! :-(

The fake sign language interpreter Thami Jantjie, last seen at the Nelson Mandela memorial service gesticulating gibberish, will be on hand for further episodes to explain everything.

An interesting point made yesterday during a radio discussion on all this was from a Sound Recordist,he said that in the past a sound recordist would always have been present but increasingly companies were not taking them on location

He said that if the dialogue was not clear it would be picked up and corrected at the time of filiming where it is not always possible to correct it at editing.
