for your enjoyment........... Vegemite advertisement from the 1950s :-D

Whoever made it up had been watching too much US tv ;-)

About 30 years ago I met a man who "painted" with vegemite! No, not the walls of his house, but kids do that.

All sorts of subjects, and he sold them! I didn't buy one.

I would imagine the paintings were varnished, because the vegemite would eventually fade & fall off

:-D

"marmite with boiled egg and soldiers"

One of the best culinary experiences of my childhood. I had forgotten all about it so gave it a go this morning. Better than ever :-)

There is something worse than veggimite though its odour does not hang around in quite the same way. The Americans like to put a concoction on their food they call "gravy". It looks like something the turkey brought up and tastes far worse. The version served in fast food chains is even more dire.. Avoid.

Hi Gwyn,
2 weeks ago, daughter took me to Waitrose with the intention of buying some (I know they do marmite crisps as well). Unfortunately, they'd run out of both crisps & flatbreads :-(

They did, however have crisp sized packets of small Marmite rice cakes. Not as good as the big Marmite rice cakes, made by 'Fudges', who also make the flatbreads, but pleasant enough :-D

I made the Pull-apart.

It was OK, but I wouldn't rave about it.

DH said it was like cheese scones with vegemite :-)

Easier to make grilled cheese with vegemite :-D

I eat vegemite and vegemite and cheese on toast.. we even have children's vegemite here. I know cause I got told that I had used my grandson's vegemite when I was staying at my daughter's place.

They also make cheeseymite but I have given that a miss.

My cousins in the states like it and we used to always have to take some when we went over but now they can order it from some place in San Diego.

I was brought up on marmite with boiled egg and soldiers. Funny thing when i married and moved up here, none of my inlaws ate marmite. I got them to try it and they hated it!

However I treied veggimite years ago and it was awful more like Bovril...couldnt stand it.

Think Marmite is an English taste as I havent found any Scots who like it!

I am born and bred North London ( Not a bit of Ozzie in me ) and a great vegemite fan, can't stand Marmite :-P.

LadyScozz

LadyScozz Report 29 Nov 2014 22:17

Funny thing is........ I never had Marmite when I lived in Scotland as a child.

I don't think I saw it in any of my rellies houses when I've visited as an adult.... that includes rellies in Scotland and England.

I like marmite ( marmite cheese yum)

but vegemite is horrible, it tastes like dead sprouts ( I like sprouts but not the flat tasting dead ones ;-) )

I was born in Scotland........... and I like vegemite, but only a wee bit. I'd never put it on haggis...... because I don't like haggis. :-)

I saw vegemite in some supermarkets in England, but never saw it in Scotland, but... I found it in Germany!

I think you have to be born an Ozzie to like Vegemite. Even though I am a great Marmite fan I cannot stand Vegemite.

I have heard that it is very effective as a shark repellent which if true would not surprise me.

In the UK Vegemite on the shelf is a sure sign of something.
