Lots are on FB Det. The bottom line is people love to complain on the boards - and I don't blame them for sharing the problems - but I don't think anyone wants to do anything more effective.

I'm on FB and so have posted re this thread and other queries I have ;-)

Kense

Kense Report 21 Jan 2016 20:08

I did get an error message a few minutes ago when trying to access My Threads but it was overwritten by the correct result after a few seconds. It seems to work normally now

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Jan 2016 20:57

mine still isn't working, Ken .....

..... that means it is almost 2 weeks since I have been able to get into My Threads

Kense

Kense Report 21 Jan 2016 21:51

I'm sorry about that Sylvia. I thought they must have done something because it worked much faster than it has done recently.

However I have tried again and got the error message. I then deleted my cache of internet files and, hey presto, it worked again. Coincidence I expect.

still happening - so tiresome and so irritating - just trying to change boards

Allan

Allan Report 21 Jan 2016 23:21

My membership expired last Sunday.

As you can see, I decided to renew it

I am now beginning to doubt the wisdom of that decision :-(

Not only do I now see the error message as I try to access 'My Threads' (whereas previously this only happened on a couple of 'Games" threads) but I also have to sign in on numerous occasions, even though I never sign out :-|

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 21 Jan 2016 23:59

welcome back, Allan :-D

but sorry that you are experiencing the same problems that we're having, although I must admit that, so far at least, I have only had to sign in once and that was after I had emptied my cache :-|

I suppose, with findmypast being free this weekend, that the servers will be even more overloaded and more error messages will be seen.

Reply to my query re errors for those who don't go on FB.

"We're very sorry that you are having issues with the site. We can confirm that the full details of this error has now been reported for investigation and correction. The closing of Friends Reunited will not effect Genes Reunited as the sites have not been owned by the same company since 2013 and no longer have any connection."

"We're very sorry that you are having issues with the site."

ho hum we have heard that before.
The MyThreads bug is serious as it makes keeping track of posts very difficult and will pretty well kill off the site if not fixed. Sylvia thinks that is the intention ...

This sort of bug is not uncommon on message board systems. When such basic client side measures as clearing the cache fail the problem is nearly always with the server configuration rather than the code. The problem won't be fixed until a techie is given a half day to sort it out which will depend on some manager bubbling it to the top of his to-do list which may never happen ...

The capacity of typical modern rack mounted server is such that the free option to FMP is unlikely to have much impact. The average surfer rates family history slightly better than mathematics and the study of extinct languages but not much.

The most popular items clogging up internet bandwidth are pron, streaming media (not pron), social media inc FB. FH barely registers.

Thank you for posting that Rose for those of us who don't use FB.

Rollo, could you explain please (preferably simply) why the My Threads bug doesn't affect us all. I haven't had the error message at all and can get into my threads, all the boards etc easily and quickly. Is it anything to do with the quantity of data? I have contributed to fewer threads than a lot of people on here.

My only problem has been having to sign in twice for the last couple of weeks, though this morning I got in first time.

In a nutshell the IIS server on which GRu runs has either (a) been given the squeeze since the recent move or (more likely) iis has been set up with the default settings. Result anybody with a non-trivial posting history is toast.

IIS means internet information server, one of Microsoft's minions current incantation #7. It is the root cause why HMGovt cannot implement DWP wish list along with the use of Agile. Now BrightSolid are heavily into ScotsGovt contracts usinng IIS and Agile. If they are applyng such a methodology to GRu then I shudder.

What is Agile ? Instead of designing and coding the software in a formal way just write down any old thing and tinker with it until it more or less works. Or doesn't in which case submit another large invoice and try again. Agile is the exact opposite of the trad meaning but anybody with a grounding in Orwell's Newspeak will know that eg IDS, Cameron, Corbyn and D C Thomson FH customer support.

For a more lucid explanation of the issues try here...

I actually don't use the my threads facility as, knowing I have had so many threads since I joined I am pretty certain it would time out while searching for them all.

where it is all going wrong

debugging the code I found this:

Expires:"Fri, 22 Jan 2016 13:37:58 GMT"
Strict-Transport-Security:"max-age=15552000; preload"
Timing-Allow-Origin:"*"
Host:"connect.facebook.net"
User-Agent:"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0"
Accept:"*/*"
Accept-Language:"en-US,en;q=0.5"
Accept-Encoding:"gzip, deflate, br"
Referer:"http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/participation?pcp=0"
Connection:"keep-alive"

This new. Why is GR attempting to connect to Facebook?
anyway it is not working
hence the timeout

After a few failures I tried the trick Elizabeth2469049 suggested and that worked (i.e. select Watched Threads and then My Threads). Once My Threads displays on a tab it seems to work OK

I got a reply this morning to my email of yesterday. Does it sound familiar???

-----
Thank you for taking the time to report this problem.

I have passed the details of this specific issue to our technical team to look at and investigate.

Your patience while we work to resolve this is much appreciated.

With kind regards,
----------

:-( :-( :-P

I did try Elizabeth's suggestion a couple of days ago but it didn't work for me. I must try it again.
