I've used rootschat in the past and found my cousin there, horses for courses really, you go with the place ( places) that suits you best. :-)

from a few years back, ( would help if adv search worked!) comments on other genealogy chat sites which might be used, esp free ones

I thought there had been a couple of postings on General Chat re GRA ..... if not, then that was an omission by the people running it.

FamilyTreeForum was started by a group of people who were on GR ....... some still post on here, but most of the originators left GR back around 2007.

They don't carry records, but there are lots of helpful forums, and even a General Forum where people can chat ............. I'm sure you'd recognise some of the names : ;-)

FTF is free, but you can give them donations to help with the cost of running the site

well genealogy is the subject of that group so I dare say that's why it was posted about on genealogy rather than general, but there have been a few groups started on FB by GR members in the past, members who wanted somewhere to chat with like minded people from here but less public than on their own page.

But yes if GR does go at some point it would be an option. :-D

So not, as Sylvia asserts, on General chat?

I had got the impression that members would prefer to be in communiction with people they are familiar with which is why I made my first suggestion.

I have seen that FB page advertised on Genealogy Chat occasionally Rosie - and they have competitions too. Seems like a good page with helpful folk on it. :-D

It's not been mentioned here much other than on the genealogy page, perhaps because in the past links to other sites have been reported?

You will definitely get a response quickly on the FB page :-) the dot com site had some tech problems, which the admin are aware of.

Island ..............

it's both

www.facebook.com/GenealogyResearchAssistant

or

http://www.genealogyresearchassistance.com/

The latter says ................ Let Genealogy Research Assistance help you discover your family history. We have many years experience and a proven track record on researching trees for ourselves, friends and clients. Our forum and groups are our way of giving something back and are free to use.

They also have a system where you can have them work privately on your tree, but there is a charge for that.

The FB page is active, and they say they will reply within an hour. The other site seems much quieter

Got there in the end LOL

I've never seen a reference to it on here Sylvia, in all 10 years that I've been lookin in on general chat and it's previous title. I wonder how many other members know about it, especially as there could be a stampede.

edit is 'Genealogy Research Assistance' a facebook page? A stand alone website?

SylviaInCanada Report 19 Jan 2016 17:07

I would like to add that Genealogy Research Assistance has been mentioned on here ........

.......... there have been threads about it on General Chat and Genealogy Chat, both when it began in 2013, and when it runs competitions twice a year

There is both a FB page and a .com site

Genealogy Research Assistance

"A friendly place to find help and advice on researching your family tree."

:-D

Is it me??? Anyone?

Back to my original suggestion. A few of you could set up a facebook group if you are concerned with losing touch and/or research help - assuming you have a fair balance of members with access to genealogy look ups.

I didn't know about these groups, but then, if they are for research I wouldn't as I don't offer help on here. I don't belong to any sites that would be helpful as I sort of froze my tree quite a while ago having got more or less as far as i wanted to and having two or three unassailable brick walls.

I use Facebook to chat to family and friends, having moved around a lot we don't have many friends here where we live so Facebook is a valuable tool for that. I do belong to a couple of groups based on my home town, one chat one photographic, both nostalgia sites. and one site based on the village where i live now.

Rambling

Rambling Report 19 Jan 2016 16:09

I wouldn't like to say which groups I help on or belong to lol, I know I can be outspoken on here and it is not everyone who would then feel comfortable if they knew I was on these groups too...where I just help with research and not to express opinions :-)

One I know of I wouldn't be likely to be accepted on anyway,at least not in my own name, having gone head to head on here with one of the admins :-)

Island

Island Report 19 Jan 2016 15:59

I don't see anyone inviting others to join, private or public. I still think it's the way to go if and when GR folds. I know some people are reluctant to give FB a go but I find FB groups much friendler than GR - and no aggro, at least on the ones I use lol

Rambling

Rambling Report 19 Jan 2016 15:46

Nooo it isn't a secret Island :-) well one is a private group, but the other is open for anyone to post on if they have genealogy queries.

I'm easily found on FB if anyone wants to lol but I am not sure that many do ;-) but I don't use it much for chatting, except to rellies who live a long way away.

GR was the first site I went on to chat, and it's had its moments that's for sure, but it's 'comfortable' I suppose
:-)

Island

Island Report 19 Jan 2016 15:38

Nobody told me Rose *shrugs* Am I alone?

Rambling

Rambling Report 19 Jan 2016 15:12

Some members are already part of several Genealogy groups, some open to all, on FB, offering the help that they give or gave on here. :-)

Island

Island Report 19 Jan 2016 14:45

13 million members? That would be 13 million registrations not individuals.

Likewise 750 million names. That could be cut in at least half as most are duplicated. It's rare that I find a name with only one entry.

With so many members on FB why don't some of you set up a group page? It can be as private as you like, closed groups and secret groups are just two options
