and GR have posted on their Facebook page, in response to a question there, that there is NO intention to close GR .............

Will Genes Reunited continue after the closing of Friends Reunited?

Genes Reunited Hi Martyn. Please be assured, the closing of Friends Reunited will not affect the Genes Reunited website. Friends Reunited is owned by a different company to Genes and we've had no connection to the site since 2013.
------

DC Thomson handed FR back to Steve Pankhurst in 2013/14 to see if he could revive it ..... he himself says 2014 in a posting on FR

No Uzzi - Friendsreunited is.

Because both were started by the same couple, and originally 'sister's' of each other, people are confusing the two.

As we know, Genesreunited is currently owned by the DC Thompson group who have published a statement that Genes is not involved.

a view is only registered once, afasik......if you don't post to it subsequently.....

(posts don't count as views)

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 20 Jan 2016 18:03

Most of the members are actually Free members .............. GR began as a free site on which to build your family tree. There weren't even any Boards at the very beginning.

I once reckoned that less than 1%, maybe even less than 0.1%, knew about the Boards, let alone posted on them. A couple of hundred posting might be high :-(

The number of views on a thread is misleading as an indication of numbers, because non-members can log into GR and read a thread ....... or they can be led to it by the thread appearing on Google.

If they had 14 million paying members then there wouldn't be any talk of the site closing. As it is there is probably very little to refund and a discount for FMP membership (or extension for existing members of FMP) would be more likely than a refund..

Island

Island Report 20 Jan 2016 11:38

That would be 13 million registrations Inky, not individual members. I reckon a third at least could be knocked off that figure

Likewise 750 million names in the database - many duplicates.

They love to mislead :-\

Inky1 Report 20 Jan 2016 11:32

13 million?

Judging by the number of views on a majority of threads there are possibly only a couple of hundred members who read any thread on any board? (I am assuming that if I read a thread twice, then that is recorded as two views?)

So what do the other 12.9 million members do?

EDIT:
Nope. As of right now, Mel's thread has 3427 views and 46295 posts. So it must be only one 'view' per member, irrespective of how may times you go back to that thread?

They are paying to advertise on Mumsnet so I don't think they'd be doing that if closure was imminent.

how are they going to refund part subs to 13 million members ;-)

That's true Ann :-D

To keep in touch with family and friends is what I use it
for also, it took me several attempts to feel comfortable
with FB and I now have the hang of it :-)

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2016 16:20

Oh facebook is great for keeping in touch with family and friends who live away from us. I don't play games on there and sometimes the language is offensive to me on some posts, but I can skim over what I don't like.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 19 Jan 2016 15:52
