Neither do we watch soaps....well, apart from one which is on at lunch time .

However, although one can avoid watching sporting events, the main news programmes devote a good proportion of the time to them.

Many of us will be thankful when the Autumn schedules appear; there's only so many 'Aircrash Investigators' a person can take!

Here's one Olympian I'll be supporting.

Be careful what you wish for.

I finally got round to watching the opening ceremony last night. Visually it was great with some very clever special effects. Sound wasn't too good but then it was a very large arena to fill. Well done to the hundreds of volunteers, onstage and off.

Fast forward through the teams parade - that does go on a bit - and on to the carnival and fireworks. Great stuff.

We'll catch some of the events but if it's sunny the garden wins :-D

I still won't be watching, but the athletes I really admire, from whichever country, not just Australia, are those who take part in the Paralympics.

They show true determination to overcome obstacles which many able-bodied athletes have never encountered.

Even when someone finishes last in the Paralympics, I will still cheer for them

Island Report 7 Aug 2016 10:35

Contestants in the Special Olympics are also cheered through to the last one in the event.
I wonder why able sportsmen and women, who have also put in a great deal of hard work, are not treated similarly? A teensy bit patronising I think.

What the heck???

I didn't see Island's post, but can't believe that whatever it was would warrant being reported.

Welcome back, mysterious RR's

Think it was something about All Atheletes should be applauded and not just the Para-olympians?

Good grief, someone's being a bit oversensitive.

I don't watch the Paralympics either. They have become almost as professional as the main event with sponsors and full time athletes.

The Olympic ideal is dead, as I said earlier.

You have to laugh. The commentators are going nuts that Team GB is on the medal table, “ a healthy 8th position”. That’s below USA, China and Australia then Italy (7), South Korea (5), Hungary (2 gold). Exclude Russia as they normally have loads before they get to the GB!

Considering the grinding poverty, and crime of every description that exists in Brazil, the amount of money spent on these games is bordering on immoral. Hysterics over one gold medal and one silver is beyond pathetic! As you can see, I'm not a fan!!!!
