I am still searching for Cecilia Ann GRIFFITHS.

I know she lived at 48 Ryecroft Street, Gloucester in 1943/44' the same time as the STEEL family lived there. One was Peggy Steel who would certainly have known Cecilia. Peggy would be in her 90s now and I am hoping I will eventually find her, for I cannot find a death certificate for her.

Peggy Steel married twice, to DAWES and then to William LAIT. William Lait died in the 1960s in Gloucester. I can find no children of Peggy's and, as I can't find a death certificate, I am hoping she's still living - perhaps in a residential home?

I'd appreciate hearing if anyone has any suggestions as to how I may trace Peggy Lait.

Many thanks
Cissy

Did you follow up the Cecelia in Australia?

Hi Jax - Imany thanks for your reply.
I wrote to a few Melbourne newspapers asking if anyone knew of the Smith family but received no replies. I found a Derek Smith and emailed him but again no reply. I really don't know where to go from here with a name like Smith - nor how to find Australian records.

So I thought that finding someone with an unusual surname, Lait, might be a simpler thing to do, especially as I can find no deAth certificate for Peggy Lait.

Cheers

I thought you may have tried to contact the tree owners on ancestry

There are three that I can see but only one has used the site recently

If you just want me to pass on a message to that one saying you are interested in cecilia and could she contact you, I will.... she may not know anything but it's a start

Just click on my name and send me your email address privately

Many thanks for your kind offer Jax.

I did, in fact, send a message to Gregory and Godfrey on the 11 March and I'm still awaiting a reply.
Have just found Daniellie on GR, so have sent her a message.

How can you see when people use the GR site?

Cheers, Cissy

jax Report 20 Apr 2015 00:06

You cannot see when people last used GR, the only thing you can sort of tell is when they joined by their membership number

Thank you Jax for your help and interest.

I'd still like to Persue the Peggy Lait line of searching while I'm waiting for the GR members to reply to my Smith enquiries - of course, I realise this may take a very long time.

I'd appreciate my suggestions your may have to help me find Peggy.

Many thanks,

Cissy

So who was Peggy? Just someone who may have lived in the same house more than 70 years ago? Would she remember that far back?

Who have these people got in their tree that you have sent messages to?

Many thanks Jax and Jacqueline. I've managed to actually SPEAK to one of John Steele's daughters and she remembers Peggy well. Alas, Peggy is no longer with us - she died a few years ago.
Well at least I can now stop looking down the Steele route.

Now back to the drawing board. I haven't heard any results from my letters to the Melbourne, Australia papers asking for any inf on Cecilia and Horace Smith's family.
Australia seems very difficult to delve into any records. Am I right? And with a name like Smith I feel I have vey little chance.
Can I ask where you might start with a name like Smith in Australia?

Thank you once again for your interest.

Hello - in Jax's last message on 22 March, she listed Notice of death of Cecilia Ann Smith in the Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper.
It states in the Notice that Cecilia was the mother in law of Brian and Graeme, suggesting that one of her daughters married one of these men.
Again, according to the Notice, Cecilia had 4 daughters - Anita, Jennifer, Deborah and Jacqueline.

I am wondering whether anyone could look up a possible marriage in Australia for each of these daughters to a Graeme or a Brian. At least I might get an easier surname to search for.

This may be an even bigger ask than I can imagine, for I know absolutely nothing about Australian records.

Thank you all once again for your help.

Cissy
