My great grandfather was in the Military Barracks, Regent Road, Salford for the 1871 census as a private in the 8th Foot. Can anybody tell me what the might have been doing in Salford at this time and how I can get more information

You could try searching FMP in the British Army Service Records database but not all records have survived.

Many thanks for the information. It also accounts for the fact that I can't find him in the 1861 census and that he is listed as a pensioner in 1881
