Many thanks for the information. It also accounts for the fact that I can't find him in the 1861 census and that he is listed as a pensioner in 1881

Looks like he was in the 2nd Battalion (Service No. 1146) and then the 1st Battalion (Service No. 952).

great grandad was born Henry Gilby in London 1842, and died in Essex in 1916.
Can anybody tell me what the 8th Foot were doing in Salford in 1871?

You could try searching FMP in the British Army Service Records database but not all records have survived.

My great grandfather was in the Military Barracks, Regent Road, Salford for the 1871 census as a private in the 8th Foot. Can anybody tell me what the might have been doing in Salford at this time and how I can get more information
